The data presented in this
the Bureau of the Census. These

procedure have been implemented
unadjusted data are included in

report are consistent with the revised data for 1982-April 1988 released August 22 by
revisions reflect benchmarking of shipments, inventories, and unfilled orders for 1986,
recalculation of seasonal adjustment factors. Modifications to our seasonal adjustment
and additional series are being adjusted. For those series not being adjusted, the
both the adjusted and unadjusted totals.

Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in July decreased
$7.9 billion or 3.5 percent from June to $220.2 billion,
following a 5.4 percent increase in June. Defense capital
goods accounted for most of the July decline. Excluding
defense, orders were down 0.7 percent.
Shipments of manufactured goods were down $2.0 billion
in July to $216.9 billion. A decline in durables of $3.3
billion was partially offset by an increase in nondurables
of $1.3 billion.

Unfilled orders in July increased $3.3 billion or 0.7
percent to $446.7 billion, continuing a strong upward trend
which began in March 1987. Inventories in July increased
$1.6 billion or 0.5 percent to $343.5 billion, continuing an
upward trend which began in April 1987. The inventory to
shipments ratio in July was 1.58, up from 1.56 in June. The
unfilled orders to shipments ratio in July was 3.74, up from
3.67 in June.
New Orders
New orders for durable goods in July were down $8.9
billion or 7.1 percent to $116.5 billion, offsetting most of
the 8.7 percent increase in June. Defense capital goods
accounted for a large part of the July decrease and June
increase. Excluding defense, the July decrease was 2.2
percent and the June increase was 4.2 percent.
By major industry category, transportation was down
$8.3 billion or 22.0 percent; all categories were down,
although the level of commercial aircraft orders remained
strong. A decrease of $0.9 billion or. 4.2 percent in
nonelectrical machinery was nearly offset by an $0.8 billion
or 4.1 percent increase in electrical machinery.
Orders for nondurable goods in July were up $1.0
billion or 1.0 percent to $103.6 billion.

Shipments
About two-thirds of the $3.3 billion decline in
durables shipments was in the transportation equipment
industry, which declined $2.1 billion or 7.2 percent to
$27.2 billion. Motoi vehicles and parts were down $2.0
billion or 10.7 percent to $16.4 billion. Primary metals
were down $0.6 billion or 4.6 percent to $11.6 billion,
following a $0.6 billion or 5.4 percent increase in June.
In nondurables, over half of the $1.3 billion increase
was in chemicals, up $0.8 billion or 3.8 percent to $20.7
billion. Food products were up $0.4 billion or 1.2 percent
to $30.4 billion.

Unfilled Orders
About two-thirds of the $3.4 billion increase in the
orders backlog in July was in transportation equipment, up
$2.3 billion or 1.2 percent, all of which was in aircraft
and parts. Most of the other durables industries also
increased. Primary metals were up $0.5 billion or 2.1
percent, nonelectrical machinery $0.3 billion or 0.6 percent
and electrical machinery $0.2 billion or 0.2 percent.
Inventories
Most of the $1.6 billion increase in inventories in
July was in durable goods up $1.5 billion or 0.7 percent to
$225.5 billion. Increases were widespread. In nondurables,
inventories at $118.0 billion were relatively unchanged from
June.
By stage of fabrication, materials and supplies
inventories increased 0.4 percent, work in process 0.6
percent and finished goods 0.4 percent. All of the
increases were concentrated in the durable goods sector.
SCHEDULED RELEASE DATES. The advance report on durable
goods for August 1988 is scheduled for September 23, 1988 at

IShipments and new orders are the totals for the period and are adjusted for trading-day and calendar-month variations; unfilled orders and inventories
areas of the end of the period and are not adjusted for trading-day or calendar-month variations.
The supplementary series are regrouping of the separate industry categories: Household durable goods industries includes household furniture; kitchen
articles and pottery; cutlery, hand tools, and hardware; household appliances, radio and TV, ophthalmic goods, watches, and clocks; and miscellaneous per-
sonal goods.
Nondefense capital goods include machinery, except electrical (excluding farm machinery and equipment and machine shops); electrical machinery (excluding
household appliances, radio and TV, and electronic components); railroad equipment; and the nondefense portions of ordnance; communication equipment; air-
craft and aircraft parts; and shipbuilding, converting and repairing.
Defense capital goods include ordnance, communication equipment, aircraft and aircraft parts, and shipbuilding converting and repairing. The defense
data are comparable to those published annually in the MA-175, Shipments to Federal Government Agencies.
