SUMMARY. New ordersfEc- fctured goods in November
increased $8.0 billion or 4.3 percent to $193.8
billion. This is the largest one month increase since
a 4.6 percent gain in June 1983. About two-thirds of
the November increase resulted from the placement of
orders for defense capital goods. Excluding defense,
manufacturers' orders were up 1.7 percent, the first
increase since July.

Shipments of manufactured goods increased $1.6
billion or 0.9 percent to $192.2 billion, the largest
since a 1.1 percent increase in May. The durable goods
sector accounted for most of the increase, up 1.3
percent as nondurables were up 0.4 -percent.

Unfilled orders held by manufacturers increased $1.7
billion or 0.5 percent to $356.2 billion. Without the
increase in defense capital goods of $3.5 billion,
unfilled orders declined 0.8 percent, the fourth
consecutive decline since a 0.9 percent increase in
July.

The book value of manufacturers' inventories
declined in November $0.9 billion or 0.3 percent to
$285.5 billion. This is the first decline in
inventories since a 0.2 percent decrease in June 1983.
Between June 1983 and August 1984 manufacturers
increased the value of their inventories by 10 percent,
or 0.7 percent per month, but in September the rate of
increase slowed to 0.6 percent and in October 0.4
percent. With the decline in inventories in November,
the inventory to shipments ratio dropped to 1.49, the
first decline in eight months.

NEW ORDERS. Excluding the $4.9 billion increase in
defense capital goods, new orders in November were up
$3.0 billion, $2.0 billion of which was for nondefense
capital goods. This 8.2 percent increase in nondefense
followed a decline last month of 8.8 percent, bringing
orders approximately up to the September level of $27.8
billion.

Within the major industries, nonelectrical
machinery was up $1.2 billion or 6.8 percent with
office and computing equipment and engines and turbines
showing the largest increases. Transportation
equipment, excluding the defense orders was up $1.2
billion or 6.4 percent with the motor vehicle industry
showing a $0.9 billion or 5.6 percent increase.
Electrical machinery was up $0.3 billion or 1.8
percent, reflecting increases in nondefense
communication equipment and electronic components.

SHIPMENTS. Shipments of durable goods in November
increased $1.3 billion or 1.3 percent to $101.7
billion. The same industries which showed large new
order increases also accounted for the shipments
increases. Transportation equipment was up $0.8
billion or 3.5 percent, all in the motor vehicle
industry. Nonelectrical machinery was up $0.5 billion
or 2.5 percent with office and computing equipment
showing a 14.9 percent increase. Electrical machinery
was up $0.3 billion or 1.8 percent, virtually all in
nondefense communication equipment.

Nondurable goods shipments increased $0.3 billion
or 0.4 percent. Increases in rubber and plastics
products, tobacco and apparel were partially offset by
declines in most of the other major industires.

UNFILLED ORDERS. The increase in manufacturers'
unfilled orders of $1.7 billion resulted from large
defense orders being partially offset by declines in
several other industries. The large increase in
defense of $3.5 billion or 2.9 percent was the largest
since the 5.0 percent increase in March.

Excluding defense, manufacturers' unfilled orders
declined $1.9 billion in November. Electrical
machinery was down $0.5 billion with declines prevalent
in most of the categories. Nonelectrical machinery was
down $0.3 billion resulting from a mixed pattern of
increases and decreases. Primary metals was down $0.2
billion, all coming from the nonferrous metals
category.

INVENTORIES. The decline in inventories in November of
0.3 percent resulted from contrasting changes between
the durable and nondurable goods sectors and among the
stages of fabrication of inventories. Durable goods
inventories showed a slight decline in total of 0.1
percent, but materials and supplies declined 1.1
percent while work in process and finished goods
increased 0.1 percent and 0.6 percent respectively.
Nondurable goods inventories declined 0.7 percent, but
most of that decrease came from a reduction in finished
goods inventories of 0.9 percent and work in process of
1.4 percent; materials and supplies were down 0.3
percent.

SCHEDULED RELEASE DATES. The advance report on durable
goods for December is scheduled for release on January
25, 1985 at 8:30 A.M. and the full report on January
31, 1985 at 10:00 A.M.

Shipments and new orders are the totals for the period and are adjusted for trading-day and calendar-month variations; unfilled orders and inventories
areas of the end of the period and are not adjusted for trading-day or calendar-month variations.
The supplementary series are regroupings of the separate industry categories: Household durable goods industries includes household furniture; kitchen
articles and pottery; cutlery, hand tools, and hardware; household appliances, radio and TV, ophthalmic goods, watches, and clocks; and miscellaneous per-
sonal goods.
Nondefense capital goods include machinery, except electrical (excluding farm machinery and equipment and machine shops); electrical machinery (excluding
household appliances, radio and TV, and electronic components); railroad equipment; and the nondefense portions of ordnance; communication equipment; air-
craft and aircraft parts; and shipbuilding, converting and repairing.
Defense capital goods include ordnance, communication equipment, aircraft and aircraft parts, and shipbuilding converting and repairing. The defense
data are comparable to those published annually in the MA-175, Shipments to Federal Government Agencies.
