reported

New orders for manufactured goods in August
$1.4 billion or 0.7 percent to $192.6 billion.
decline in the nondurable goods sector of $1.9
or 2.0 percent was partially offset by an
in the durable sector of $0.5 billion or 0.5
Durable .goods orders had earlier been
as a 0.9 percent decline for August.

Shipments of manufactured goods increased $1.3
billion.or 0.7 percent in August to $191.9 billion. An
increase in durable goods shipments of $2.-7 billion or
2.7 percent was partially offset by a decline in
nondurable goods shipments of $1.4 billion or 1.5
percent.

Manufacturers' unfilled orders were up $0.7
billion or 0.2 percent from July at $359.7 billion.
Excluding the defense capital goods category, the level
of manufacturers' unfilled orders declined 0.3 percent.

Manufacturers' inventories increased $3.5 billion
or 1.3 percent from July to August to $283.5 billion.
Since the end of January when they were estimated at
$260.9 billion, manufacturers have increased
inventories by $22.7 billion or 8.7 percent.

NEW ORDERS. The 0.5 percent increase in durable goods
new orders resulted from larger offsetting movements
within the major industry categories. Primary metals
in total was up 0.9 percent, but steel increased 4.1
percent while non ferrous metals declined 1.1 percent.
Transportation equipment was up 0.1 percent, but motor
vehicles and parts increased 8.5 percent while aircraft
and parts decreased 13.6 percent. Machinery was down
1.5 percent, but electrical machinery was up 1.6
percent while nonelectrical fell 4.2 percent.

The decline in nondurable goods new orders, which
for the most part reflects shipments for the month,
reflected declines in all the major industries except
tobacco.

SHIPMENTS. Over half of the increase in shipments of
durable goods of $2.7 billion or 2.7 percent was caused
by an increase in motor vehicle and parts as the
industry continued shipping at a greater rate than
usual during their model changeover period. Excluding
this industry, durable goods shipments were up 1.3
percent.

The decline in shipments of nondurable goods of
1.5 percent was the largest since the end of the
recession. The August decreases were widespread. The
largest was in food products which was down $0.7
billion or 3.0 percent to $24.5 billion. This followed
a 3.2 percent increase last month.

UNFILLED ORDERS. Although the increase in unfilled
orders in August was nominal, up 0.2 percent, more
significant movements were reported in the specific
industries. The backlog of orders for electrical
machinery increased $1.1 billion or 1.3 percent to
$80.3 billion. Most of this was offset by declines in
transportation equipment of $0.4 billion or 0.3 percent
to $146.8 billion and primary metals of $0.3 billion or
1.6 percent to $20.4 billion. This is the fourth
consecutive decline in primary metals, dropping the
level $2.5 billion below the April high of $22.9
billion.

INVENTORIES. The value of inventories of durable goods
manufacturers in August increased $2.6 billion or 1.4
percent to $187.2 billion. The machinery and
transportation equipment categories accounted for
virtually all of the increase. Nonelectrical machinery
was up $1.0 billion or 2.7 percent, electrical was up
$0.6 billion or 1.9 percent, and transportation
equipment was up $0.8 billion or 1.8 percent.

Most of the nondurable goods industries
contributed to the 0.9 percent increase in that sector
with food products going up $0.3 billion or 1.4 percent
and chemicals increasing $0.3 billion or 1.5 percent.

In both the durable and nondurable goods sectors,
the work in process and finished goods inventories
showed large increases. Work in process inventories
increased 1.6 percent and finished goods increased 1.8
percent. Materials and supplies inventories were up
0.4 percent.

The inventory to shipments ratio in August was
1.48. Since reaching a low last December of 1.40, the
ratio has been steadily increasing except for a slight
decline in March.

SCHEDULED RELEASE DATES. The advance report on durable
goods for September is scheduled for release on October
23, 1984 at 8:30 A.M. and the full report on October
31, 1984 at 10:00 A.M.

Preliminary. rRevised.

Shipments and new orders are the totals for the period and are adjusted for trading-day and calendar-month variations; unfilled orders and inventories
areas of the end of the period and are not adjusted for trading-day or calendar-month variations.
The supplementary series are regroupings of the separate industry categories: Household durable goods industries includes household furniture; kitchen
articles and pottery; cutlery, hand tools, and hardware; household appliances, radio and TV, ophthalmic goods, watches, and clocks; and miscellaneous per-
sonal goods.
Nondefense capital goods include machinery, except electrical (excluding farm machinery and equipment and machine shops); electrical machinery (excluding
household appliances, radio and TV, and electronic components); railroad equipment; and the nondefense portions of ordnance; communication equipment; air-
craft and aircraft parts; and shipbuilding, converting and repairing.
Defense capital goods include ordnance, communication equipment, aircraft and aircraft parts, and shipbuilding converting and repairing. The defense
data are comparable to those published annually in the MA-175, Shipments to Federal Government Agencies.
