Manufacturers' Shipments,

SInventories, and Orders

November 1987
8e M3-(87)-11
For Wire Transmission 10 a.m. EST Thursday, December 31, 1987

(All Figures in text are in seasonally adjusted current dollars)

SUMMARY. New orders for manufactured goods in November
increased $0.3 billion or 0.1 percent to $209.7 billion. A
decline in the durable goods sector of $0.4 billion or 0.4
percent to $110.7 billion was more than offset by an
increase in nondurables of $0.7 billion or 0.7 percent to
$99.0 billion.

Shipments of manufactured goods in Noyember increased $0.9
billion or 0.5 percent to $207.3 billion. The increase was
in the nondurable sector, up $1.0 billion or 1.0 percent to
$99.2 billion; durables decreased- $0.1 billion or 0.1
percent to $108.2 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured goods in November increased
$2.3 billion or 0.6 percent to $401.0 billion. This is the
first time the $400 billion level has been reached,
continuing the upward trend which began in March.

Current cost inventories in November increased $2.5 billion
or 0.8 percent to $331.1 billion.. This is the fifth
consecutive monthly increase in inventories and the largest
since the 0.8 percent increase in January. The inventory to
shipments ratio for November was 1.60, up from 1.59 in
October.

NEW ORDERS. The decrease of 0.4 percent in new orders for
durable goods in November resulted from a mixed pattern of
change within the specific industries. The largest decline
was in nonelectrical machinery, down $1.3 billion or 6.8
percent to $17.7 billion. The largest increases were in
fabricated metals products, up $0.3 billion or 3.0 percent
to $11.4 billion; electrical machinery, up $0.3 billion or
1.6 percent to $20.3 billion; and transportation equipment,
up $0.2 billion or 0.7 percent, to $28.8 billion. The
increase in transportation equipment resulted from a large
increase in shipbuilding and tanks more than offsetting
declines in the other categories.

New orders for nondurables were up $0.7 billion or 0.7
percent to $99.0 billion.

SHIPMENTS. Shipments of durable goods in November were down
slightly from October, decreasing $0.1 billion or 0.1
percent to $108.2 billion. The largest declines were in
nonelectrical machinery, down $0.8 billion or 4.3 percent to
$17.7 billion and transportation equipment, down $0.2
billion or 0.6 percent to $27.3 billion.

Shipments of nondurables goods were up $1.0 billion or 1.0
percent to $99.2 billion. Excluding tobacco which is highly
volatile, the increase was 0.4 percent.

UNFILLED ORDERS. Unfilled orders for durable goods in
November increased $2.5 billion or 0.6 percent to $387.2
billion. Unfilled orders have been increasing since March,
although the rate of increase has slowed the last four
months.

Most of the November increase was in transportation
equipment, up $1.5 billion or 0.9 percent to $174.8 billion,
with both aircraft and parts and shipbuilding and tanks
increasing. The only other large increase was in electrical
machinery, up $0.9 billion or 1.0 percent to $96.0 billion.

INVENTORIES. Increases in inventories were widespread.
Durable goods inventories increased $2.0 billion or 0.9
percent to $215.4 billion. The largest increases were in
transportation equipment, up $0.8 billion or 1.3 percent to
$57.6 billion, and nonelectrical machinery, up $0.4 billion
or 0.9 percent to $41.3 billion. Inventories of nondurable
goods increased $0.5 billion or 0.4 percent to 5115.6
billion.

All stages of fabrication of inventories were up in
November. Materials and supplies and finished goods were
each up 0.6 percent, while work in process increased 1.1
percent.
