Volume decreased from the year before. The percentage of sales placed under loan dropped substantially - while country sales for types 22-23 and 35 showed an increase. Type 21 A record average of $126.69 per hundred was set for 3.6 million gross pounds during the 1980 81 season. This was up $9.54 from the previous high set for the 1976 crop. However, a decrease in acreage and lower yields caused the value to drop almost 22 percent from last season. Grade averages increased by mainly $17 to $32 per hundred over levels of last year. Averages ranged from $227 for grade CLL 46 to $39 for N2. A sig- nificant drop was recorded in quality. Loan receipts amounted to 7.1 percent of sales compared with 16.0 percent last season. Types 22-23 Producer's sales of 32.2 million pounds were 7.0 million below 1979 and 19 million below 1978. Auction sales comprised 44 percent of the 1980 crop and averaged $121.87 per hundred. While this was $19.07 above 1979 the price was $16.22 below the record set in 1976. Country sales set a new record averaging $158.30 per hundred. The quality of auction sales declined from last year as more green and greenish grades appeared on the floors. However, demand was good and only one grade N2 - recorded a drop in the bid price. Indeed, most grades registered gains of $30 $40 per hundred. Loan receipts declined from 40 percent in 1979 to 15 percent this season. Type 35 A record high general average was established as growers presented a better quality crop while grade averages improved over the previous year. Gross sales totaled 8.6 million pounds averaging $120.95 per hundred up $11.79 from last season. Country sales totaled 3.9 million pounds averaging $144.62. Loan receipts amounted to 12.9 percent of sales compared with 16.5 percent last season Type 36 Higher grade prices and better quality resulted in a record high general average exceeding the 1976 crop. Volume was only 600,000 pounds smaller. Gross sales totaled 4.4 million pounds averaging $126.49 an increase of $21.12 per hundred from the previous year. Averages increased for about 90 percent of the grades. The few losses were confined to lugs and nondescript. Loan receipts were 6.5 percent of sales. Type 37 Volume was the lightest ever for this type 385,480 pounds. The average of $127.40 is the highest on record and was a result of better quality and improved grade averages. Virtually no tobacco was placed under loan.
