The event,sponsoredbytheChinese AmericanStudentAssociation, ispartof Asian Kaleidoscope Month,whichaims to promote Asiancultureandawareness..Alen Hsu,presidentoftheassociation, said this year's festival willcelebrateChi nese as well as American culture. "America is a 'meltingpot'andweshouldcelebrate that," Hsu said. "Wewanttopropa gateourowncultureandatthesametime learnaboutothercultures." Hsu saidtheChinese festival celebratesthedaywhenthemoonisatits fullest,whichusually landsonthe15thday oftheeighthlunarmonth.This year's Moon Festival will be heldlaterthanusualbecauseoftheextramonthina Chineselunarcalendar.HsusaidtomanyChinese,thefullmoon'sroundshapesymbolizes"abundance,harmonyandluck," as well as atimefor familyreunions."Traditionally, familyandfriendscometogethertogazeatthefullmoonandeatmooncake," said Hsu,addingthattheminiaturecakes are filled withlotus-seedpasteorred-beanpastewitha salted egg yolkinthemiddle.Tonight'sfestivalbeginsat8 p.m.attheReitz Union Ballroomandis free for allUFstudents.Historic Gainesville willtransforminto a colorful marketplacetonightasthe20thAnnual Downtown FestivalandArts Showhitsthetown.Thefestival,heldbetweenCity HallandtheHippodrome State Theatre, kicks off tOnightat7 with a free Downtown Festival BluesConcertbytheGainesville Friends of JazzandBlues.Thefestival willcontinuethroughtheweekendwith live performancesonthreestages, featuring a varietyofmusic from folkandcountrytopopandsoul."TheDowntownFestivalBluesConcertistheperfectappetizertoaweekend-longentertainmentextravaganza,"EntertainmentCoordinatorBillHutchinsonstatedinapressrelease.
