January 21, 1985

During the week of January 14-18, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
Agricultural Marketing Service announced 2 commodity purchases totaling
22,355,432 pounds at a cost of $13,729,000.
The purchases were: bulk frozen ground beef; canned tomato paste. Offers
for frozen fried batter/breaded chicken patties were rejected because prices
were considered to be higher than warranted under prevailing marketing
conditions.
All purchases were for school lunch and other domestic feeding programs
with the bulk going to the school lunch program.
'Offers were invited for: bulk frozen ground beef; frozen fried
batter/breaded chicken patties; applejuice, grapefruit juice, orange juice,
grape juice, dehydrated potatoes, vegetarian beans, whole kernel corn, cream
style corn, whole potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, applesauce,
purple plums, pears/fruit cocktail, dry edible beans, and corn syrup blend.
Dry edible beans, canned vegetarian beans, sweet potatoes and whole potatoes
will be purchased only from small businesses.
