TOTAL POTATO STOCKS DOWN 9 PERCENT

Stocks of Irish potatoes held in storage for all uses by growers, local
dealers, and processors in fall production areas totaled 52.9 million cwt.
on April 1, 1974, according to the Crop Reporting Board. This is 9 percent
less than the 58.2 million cwt. on hand a year earlier.

In the eight Eastern States, April 1, 1974 supplies totaled 10.8 million
cwt., 15 percent or 1.9 million cwt. below the 12.6 million on hand a year
earlier. Maine stocks of 9.6 million cwt. compare with 11.4 million a year
earlier and are down 16 percent. Stocks in Long Island and Upstate New York
were above year earlier levels.

Stocks of 7.6 million cwt. in the eight Central States were 5 percent
less than the April 1, 1973 stocks of 8.0 million. North Dakota stocks at
3.2 million are down slightly from the 3.3 million cwt. of a year earlier.
Stocks in Minnesota at 2.3 million cwt. and Michigan at 1.0 million cwt.
were also below year earlier levels.

For the eight Western States, April 1, 1974 stocks totaled 34.6 million
cwt., 8 percent less than the 37.6 million cwt. on hand a year earlier.
April 1 stocks levels were below a year earlier in all Western States except
Washington and Oregon. Idaho stocks at 23.5 million cwt. were 3.5 million
cwt. below last year, while Washington stocks at 5.5 million cwt. were 1.3
million cwt. more than a year ago.

Disappearance to April 1, 1974 from the 1973 fall crop production of
252.0 million cwt. was 199.1 million cwt. Comparable disappearance from the
1972 production was 190.7 million cwt.

Use of potatoes from the 1973 crop for processing to April 1, 1974 in
Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington
totaled 79.2 million cwt., up 9 percent the 72.4 million cwt. processed
for the corresponding period a year ago urE LR
