STOCKS DOWN 7 PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR

Stocks of Irish potatoes held in storage for all uses by growers, local deal-
ers and processors in fall production areas totaled 77.6 million cwt. on March 1,
1974, according to the Crop Reporting Board. This is 7 percent less than the 83.3
million cwt. on hand March 1 of last year and 21 percent less than the 98.5 million
cwt. on hand March 1, 1972.

In the eight Eastern States, March 1, 1974, supplies totaled 15.4 million
cwt., 13 percent below the 17.6 million on hand a year earlier and 40 percent below
the same period in 1972. Maine stocks at 13.0 million cwt. were 2.3 million below
last year and 8.0 million cwt. less than March 1, 1972. Pennsylvania stocks re-
mained above year earlier levels.

For the eight Central States, stocks of 13.6 million cwt. were 2 percent be-
low the March 1, 1973 stocks and 32 percent less than 1972. Stocks in storage on
March 1, 1974 were below year earlier levels in all States except Wisconsin and
Nebraska. North Dakota stocks at 5.5 million cwt, were slightly below the 5.6 mil-
lion cwt. on hand a year earlier while Minnesota at 4.1 million cwt. was slightly
below last year.

Stocks of 48.6 million cwt. in the eight Western States were 6 percent less
than the March 1, 1973 stocks of 51.7 million. In all States except Washington,
stocks were lower than on the same date in 1973. Idaho stocks at 31.0 million
cwt. were 3.5 million cwt. below last year. At 9.1 million cwt. Washington stocks
were 2.0 million cwt. above a year earlier.

Disappearance to March 1 from the 1973 fall crop of 252.0 million cwt. was
174.4 million cwt. Comparable disappearance from the 1972 production totaled
165.5 million cwt. and from the 1971 crop totaled 168.2 million. Usage of potatoes
for processing from the 1973 crops to March 1, 1974 in Maine, Idaho, Washington,
Oregon, Michigan, Minnesota and North Dakota totaled 68.8 million cwt., up 10 per-
cent from the 62.4 million cwt. used for the corresponding period last year.
