TOTAL POTATO STOCKS DOWN 4 PERCENT
FEBRUARY 1, 1974
Stocks of Irish potatoes held in storage for all uses by growers, local
dealers, and processors in fall production areas totaled 102.4 million cwt. on
SFebruary 1, 1974, according to the Crop Reporting Board. This is 4 percent less than
the 107.2 million cwt. on hand a year earlier and 18 percent less than the 124.4
million cwt. on hand February 1, 1972.

In the eight Eastern States, February 1, 1974, supplies totaled 19.6 million
cwt., 13 percent or 3.0 million cwt. below the 22.5 million on hand a year earlier.
Maine stocks of 15.6 million cwt., compare with 18.5 million a year earlier, down
16 percent. Stocks in Long Island and Upstate New York, and in Pennsylvania were
above year earlier levels.

Stocks of 20.6 million cwt. in the eight Central States were 1 percent more than
the February 1, 1973 stocks of 20.3 million. North Dakota stocks at 8.3 million are
up from the 7.6 million cwt. a year earlier, while Minnesota is unchanged from last
year at 6.0 million cwt. Michigan stocks at 2.3 million cwt. declined from the year
earlier level of 2.8 million cwt.

For the eight Western States, February 1, 1974 stocks totaled 62.3 million cwt.,
3 percent less than the 64.3 million cwt. on hand a year earlier. Reduction in
stocks levels from a year earlier occurred in all Western States except Washington
and Oregon. Idaho at 38.0 million cwt. is 3.0 million cwt. below last year, while
Washington at 12.6 million cwt. increased 2.3 million cwt. from a year ago.

Disap parance from the 1973 fall crop production of 252.0 million cwt. to
February 1, 1974 was 149.6 million cwt. Comparable disappearance from the 1972 pro-
duction was 141.7 million cwt.

Use of potatoes from the 1973 crop for processing to February 1, 1974 in Idaho,
Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington totaled 58.4 million
cwt., up 11 percent from s- ine m-inn eu-t processed for the corresponding period
