4 TOTAL POTATO STOCKS DOWN 4 PERCENT
JANUARY 1, 1974

Storage stocks of Irish potatoes for all uses held by growers, local dealers,
and processors in fall productionareas totaled 128.9 million cwt. on January 1, 1974,
according to the Crop Reporting Board. This is 4 percent less than the 134.3 million
cwt. on hand a year earlier and 22.5 million cwt. less than the 151.4 million cwt. on
hand January 1, 1972.

So..... Socks in the eight Eastern States on January 1, 1974 totaled 24.6 million cwt.,
12 percent less than the 28.0 million cwt. on hand a year earlier. New Englandstocks
of 18.9 million cwt. were below a year ago by 3.9 million cwt. or 17 percent.
Supplies in Upstate New York and Pennsylvania were above year-earlier levels.

For the eight Central States, January 1, potato stocks of 27.2 million cwt. were
1 percent less than the 27.6 million cwt. a year earlier. North Dakota stocks of
10.6 million cwt. are up 7 percent and compare with 9.9 million cwt. a year ago.
Declines from a year ago were recorded for Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio.

Stocks in the eight Western States totaled 77.1 million cwt., 2 percent less
than the 78.8 million cwt. on hand a year earlier. Idaho stocks of 46.0 million were
6 percent less than a year earlier at 49.0 million, while Washington, with 15.6 mil-
lion this year, was 16 percent more than a year ago at 13.4 million cwt. Stocks in
Oregon and Utah were above a year ago, while remaining States were lower.

Disappearance from the 1973 fall crop production of 252.0 million cwt. to
January 1, 1974 totaled 123.1 million cwt., 8 percent more than the 114.5 million
cwt. removed in the comparable period a year earlier.

S Use of potatoes for processing from the 1973 crops, through December 1973 in
Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington totaled 48.0
m~itlian cwt., compared with 42.1 million cwt. for the corresponding period a year
ago.

Sales of potatoes for all purposes, including fresh market, processing, seed
