SUGAR MARKET HIGHLIGHTS


DELIVERIES

Sugar distribution for Continental consumption in the first quarter of
1982 totaled 2,074,933 short tons, raw value, down 6 percent from the first
quarter of 1981. An additional 42,888 tons were distributed for export during
the first quarter of 1982, down 85 percent from the first quarter of 1981.
INVENTORIES

Sugar stocks held by U.S. primary distributors on March 31, 1982 totaled
3.6 million short tons, raw value, up 14 percent from March 31, 1981.
DOMESTIC PRODUCTION


Sugar production for the mainland United States during the
of 1982 totaled 1.4 million short tons, raw value. Production
was 5 percent less than the amount produced in the first quarter

Hawaiian sugar production in the first quarter of 1982 totaled 72,441 tons,
down 39 percent from the first quarter of 1981.
IMPORTS

During the first quarter of 1982, receipts of raw imported sugar reported
by U.S. cane refiners totaled 887,724 short tons, raw value, down 15 percent
from the first quarter of 1981. Thailand supplied more than 200,000 tons
during the first quarter of 1982 and Australia supplied more than 150,000 tons.

beginning with this issue. Previously, monthly reports were provided *
but were discontinued after the March 26, 1982 issue. *
