The people seem to favor Pro- iect No. 3. which is the most ex- tensive program suggested, as it had a lead of from fifty to sixty votes yesterday, the two lesser projects getting very lit- tle support. Very few of thc voters have expressed them- s elves as against paving. In the event, that Project No. is carried out, property owners who were assessed for a third (if the cost of Center and Eighth street paving last year will be refunded their assessments and! the entire issue will be by taxa- tion and not by direct assess- ments on the property owners and city, as was the case when the city put down the five blocks of paving last summer. The proposition Reemsm to, ..w* peal to the people, and should a sufficient number express trem- selves as in favor of paving, the Chamber of Commerce will turn the questionnaires over to thep City Commission for such dis- posal as that body .et. fit to make of them. A- .* - A Our idea of building Fernan- dina is not so much to, adver- tise our community as a com- mercial rival of Chicago or Jack- sonville or to attempt to prove that its climate is the most won derful in the known world, bu rather to do quietly and effect tively day by day the little tasl. that is next to us. Many i. Chamber of Commerce in th, past has spent a great deal of time on the outer walls of the city, blowing the community horn, while it overlooked en- tirely the mud hole in front of the door, the unsanitary, stag- nant, mosquito breeding pool in the back yard, the open garbage can, the unpainted fences and unkept yards. Let's not be so ambitious to do great things that we will ov- erlook the little useful services that will mean so much to life in our community. One of- the biggest needs in the modern American city is more neighborliness. In the' quest for gold we have allowed our cities to become collections of service stations, formerly called homes. .American cities. are in danger of disintegrating by sheer weight of great num- bers who are not closely knit to- gether. The smaller towns in America have a big chance over the larg- er oqes in this. Here one finds a COMMUNITY in all that beau- tiful word signifies, a group of citizens with common interests. Don't dream of making our city merely bigger. We should be coficerned about making it better. This is not only good sense, but it is good business, for a family that is happy and con- tented is permanent, and peo- ple who love to live in their town will tell others, in the most ef- fective publicity ever devised on earth-the word of mouth re- commendation of the trusted friend. Let's put "our house in or- der." EUROPEAN PEACE Iw--i-- sn fMu%&rZ.. I- .Mrtua ft tact, the neadlnen tell us, 1el- lowing an argument between France and England on a pact program, under the terms of which England's great war strength is thrown behind a four-power pact, which guaran- tees the inviolability of the Rhine frontiers as delimited by the Versailles treaty. Other participants, besides France, will be Belgium and Germany, pro- viding the latter agrees to the conditions. The news will be viewed with skepticism by most people in the United States, although no one would welcome peace in Europe any more than Americans. The United States has been unjustly accused of delaying peace in Europe by adherring to :ts tradition of aloofness and avoiding foreign entanglements. If this means peace, this new pact, then all power to it, be- cause America, made up of peace-loving people, finds no pleasure in seeing her friends across the sea continually em- broiled in war-like gestures. America's participation in European affairs to any further extent than she has been engag- ed would not have hastened peace. It was a tangle that only Europeans could unravel. If they have succeeded, America will rejoice, with them. , A newspaper editor has fig- ired out a newspaper has over wo million chances to make a mistake on the simple phrase, to be or not to be." Now don't :he dear public be a little less critical. Nothing takes the wind out of a fellow's sails more than to find everyone else in town re- ceived a souvenir- postal card from his friend. - The loose-mouthed men -who are ready to convict the accus- ed without fair trial are just as docile as any other citizens when they are put on a jury. He who casts the first stone generally breaks the window glass, but some of the other boys in the crowd may be blamed for it. VWhen ou give other people a piece of your mind. you are4 MRS. J. GEO.
