The Health Science Center Library (HSCL) has not been renovated sinceitwas builtin1974, anditistherefore imperative that we experience innovative library spaces prior to our renovation planning. New services and space planning requires a team approach. Faculty members involvedinthis FEO include myself as the Associate Dean and Directorofthe HSCL; the Associate Director of the Biomedical and Health Information Services DepartmentofHSCL, as any new services created wouldberun through that department; and the Chair of the Building Renovation Assessment Task Force thatisgathering inputonwhat faculty and students would like to seeina renovated library. Fall 2011: A teamofthree HSCL librarians will travel for a three day site visit to Anschutz Medical Campus, the health science libraryinDenver, Colorado (http://hslibrary.ucdenver.edul?red=O).This library was recently built andisconsidered tobea state of the art facility best designed to meet the needsofthe current and future library users. WhileinDenver we will also learn more about how the library supports their Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). Winter 2012: A teamofthreeUFHSCL librarians will visit Purdue University Libraries (http://www.purdue.edu/) for a three day site visit to gather information and techniquesonthe planning and implementationofa data curation program. Data curationisa very new field whose importanceinresearch universities stronginthe STEM fieldsisbeing reinforced by thenewly instituted NSF policy for a data management plan to be submitted with every NSF grant application. Spring 2012: A teamofthreeUFHSCL librarians would travel to the University of Pittsburgh Falk Libraryofthe Health Sciences (http://www.hsls.pitt.edu/aboutllibraries/falk) for a three day site visit to gather informationontheir biomedical informatics, bioinformatics and clinical and translational science support services. These areas have been identified as new HSCL initiatives and are closely aligned with the NIH (National Institute of Health) CTSA ( of whichUFhas been oneofthe recipients. The goal of the CTSAisto realize the benefits of researchina timelier manner and conversely to bring clinical information and results back to the researchers to increase research production. PHASEIIHost expertsindata curation/management (Carol Palmer, PhD, UniversityofIllinois) and library-based bioinformatics/clinical and translational science support (David Osterbur, PhD, MUS, Harvard) at the HSCLinthe Summerof2012. These experts will provide consultation and instructional services and meet with library and other administration to discuss the creationofthese new services at the HSCL.FEDFaculty Enhancement Opportunity Application and Budget Approval Form(Rev.11/10)

As partofthis award, I will be requesting travel funds so that Michele Tennant, Hannah Norton (oneofour new librarians), and I can visit libraries around the country. Given your library's expertise in biomedical informatics and bioinformatics, a visit to your library would be extremely helpful.Ifyour library would be willing to host us, we would be interested in spending three days at your library visiting with Ansurnan Chattopadhyay and Carrie Iwema to learn about their bioinformatics support program, as well as with you and Nancy Tannery to learn more about your roles in the Biomedical Informatics program at Pittsburgh. I know that Michele made a previous attempt to visit your library and that she was not able to do so due to IRE difficulties, however, this new endeavor is not a research project, will not be published or presented, and will not require IRE. So IRE should not be an issue. As you can imagine we are incredibly committed during the next several months putting into operation our data management process here at Purdue as well as managing and hosting workshops that are part of several IMLS grants. Scotts thought is that three days would be longer than necessary to obtain a clear overview of what we are doing at Purdue, a day or day and a half would likely be sufficient. And, it would not be possible for us to host a visit until summer after we get through the next several, hectic months. Your message didnt state the exact timeframe in which you were working, so possibly this would work for you. Best regards, JimJames L. Feb. 7, 2011 Dear Dr. Mullins, We are in the process of applying for an internal institutional grant requesting travel support for a series of site visits to a few carefully selected health and/or science libraries around the country. We have selected data curation as a field whose importance in research institutions strong in STEM is being reinforced by the NSF data management policies. We attended IATUL at Purdue last summer, and were impressed with the work that Purdue and Jake Carlson are performing in the data area. As such, we have identified your library as an innovator and leader in the creation of a data curation program. The purpose of this letter is to ask if you would be willing to host our three person team for a three day visit so that we may gather ideas and information for the creation of our own data curation program. Additionally, if you agree to host us would you be willing to respond to this e-mail indicating your willingness to host our visit? Thank you for you kind attention to this request. We would love to have you and your team visit us in Denver, tho perhaps you might want to schedule your visit for the spring or summer and not when its 14 degrees out, as it is right now as I type! Its been terribly cold here! Would you please let me know a bit more about what your team would like to do while here, and what you would need from us? We can of course give tours of our facility and the campus, we can arrange for you to meet folks here, and we can certainly talk about our programming, support for our universitys CTSA award, etc. What other experiences are you looking for, and what hosting needs will you have? With that info we should be able to put something together that will work for you and allow us to profile our truly stunning building. Again, thanks for your interest in our library! And, if its easier to discuss this over the phone, please feel free to give me a call or provide a best time and Ill be happy to ring you. I can be reached at 303-724-2133. Thx! Dear Jerry, As a relatively new library director of a library greatly in need of renovation, I am investigating new and renovated library spaces. In support of this investigation, I am applying for a University of Florida Faculty Enhancement Opportunity award basically a mini-sabbatical. As part of this award, I will be requesting travel funds so that Michele Tennant, Hannah Norton (one of our new librarians), and I can visit libraries around the country. Since you have a new state of the art library, we are very interested in visiting your facility. We are also interested in learning about how your library supports your Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. UF was awarded a CTSA in 2009, and we are still exploring how to better serve our clinical and translational researchers. Please let me know if you are willing to host us at your library. If my award application is successful, we will be able to provide your library with a modest payment for hosting us. The Health Science Center Library (HSCL) in Gainesville has not had a major renovation sinceitwas built over 30 years ago. Methods ofteaching and research in the health sciences have changed significantly in that time, ashave the sources and formatsofscholarly resources. While the HSCL has made incremental improvements, itneeds to be redesigned and updated to meet the needsoftoday's and tomorrow's students, faculty and researchers. Before this investmentismade, itisnecessary to consider the options and seek advice from experts. I strongly endorse this proposal.Itisdifficult to alternative useofspace without experiencing and evaluating alternatives that have been employed successful in similar settings.
