Some dates on this calendar are tentative and are therefore subject to change. A Message from the President We begin our message this year thanking the Panamanian community for the support it has given this calendar, which, aside from the information we offer, represents for us a benefit to those suffering from sickle cell anemia. It will also help circulate information about SICKLE CELL ANEMIA, its complications or sequelae, and how to prevent it. This cruel disease has no cure to date, but it can be prevented with some goodwill from future parents. How can this be possible? By taking into consideration some facts or recommendations, as follows: Bear in mind that this is a hereditary disease stemming from the person's parents, who are carriers of the abnormal hemoglobin "S". "A" is the normal type of hemoglobin. "S" is the type of hemoglobin of those who suffer from sickle cell anemia. "AS" is the type of hemoglobin of the carriers. AS + AS can have an "SS" baby, who will suffer all his life. As the carrier usually has no symptoms, he will only know he has the disease if he undergoes a blood test called hemoglobin electrophoresis. To conclude, two carriers should not get married, if they do, they should not have children. But the decision is only yours if you are a carrier. Only you can choose whether or not to have a sickle cell anemic child. This is being responsible parents. For more information, call 61-3611 or write to APPAF, Box 6-9298, El Dorado. AYUDA. The purpose of APPAF is to educate the population and to stimulate the young generation to be responsible enough so that they will not procreate sick children who suffer all their lives. Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetically carried disease, caused by changes in the normal hemoglobin called "A." Usually the red blood cells are round. If there is a large amount of hemoglobin "S" present, the red blood cells, upon the loss of oxygen, become shaped in a semi-lunar form. These cells have a short life span and therefore cause anemia. Sickle Cell Anemia causes severe pain in J~ints and bones from time to time, and produces damage to tissues and organs which may be irreversible. Two persons with sickle traits should not consider having children together, since the chances are one out of four that each child they have will be born with Sickle Cell Anemia. An unusual "computerized created"calendar, which gives important dates, national holidays, special events, embassy holidays, Panama Canal pay days and liberal leave days, national fairs, Jewish holy days, religious observances and allows for notations, is being sold for the benefit of this organization. Further information may be obtained by writing to APPAF, Box 6-9298, El Dorado, Panama or by contacting APPAF President, Mrs. Elvira Higuero at 61-3611 or Carmela Gobern at 24-6939.
