121. THE DESHA PLANTATION
Charles DeSha home 2.2 miles south of waldo on US 301
on the left hand side of the road.
Tiie house is one story, white, ridge tin roof with
wood siding, double hung windows, much longer than it
is wide. The change since 1923 is the enclosed front
porch and the change inside from a small kitchen at
far east end, to a small store room k which may or may
not have been finished off) and the once-was dining room
becoming the large kitchen, next to it the large dining
room ( which was a bed room) then the present living room
with old fireplace. The bath, not there in 1923 is
at the west end of the long porch on the south east
side of the house. The bath opens on the porch. One
east door opens from the present living room to this
long porch, another on the east center side of the
living room opens into the present dining room. There
are three bedrooms on the south west corner of the
house, one still opening, I think on to thefront porch.
At the back of the house is a shed presently used for
sorting pecans, used not too many years ago for the
shed where the cane syrup was cooked, prior to that it
or some of it)may have been built from the first log
cabin built back in 1850's by Franklin DeSha where he
and his second wife, Eliza 'arrish DeSha, lived white
the house was under construction. franklin's son,
ueorge was born in 1858, in the new house, some members
of the family say and if so the present house is well
over 10u years old. ihe Alachua county census for l8bu
lists Mrs. Lary A.hunter, the woman who reared franklin,
as still alive and 72 years old. This was household 55
and -. Earle household 58. ve know the location of the
Barle home between the ueSha plantation and Parleton.
xhe land was secured through a land grant certificate
4231 Kecorded vol. 9,page 22 signed By the president;
i.B. Hiayes, bale application July 1,1852, patent applica-
tion iay 1,1855 uate of patent to ueorge M.Debha
June 1,1880. Franklin died when ueorge Ai. was but 12
perhaps that is the reason for such a long wait ?
We note tie president's signature appears twice not in
the same handwriting. The first time it is Rutherford R."

Directly back of the house near the back steps is the
old store room partly constructed of logs interesting
construction. nere food was stored in barrels even as
ueorge m's children were growing up and the family tells
of some of the older children thinking combining flour
and sugar a joke until "Daddy" George v. whipped every
last one except the baby, with his leather belt, waiting
until all were assembled in bed. ne had 12 children!
It did not matter who instigated the mischief- one and
all were punished it was easier than counting noses.

On the north and on the south sides of the house show the hip
roof of this residence, centrally located on the south side it
is over the bedroom next to the bath, ,nd over the new dining room
on the other side.

The barn not only had a gable roof but it has a shed on either
of the long sides the one on the north at the west end is where
cattle are penned, and on the south side at the west end this shed
part is enclosed. There is an opeh window on the west end of the
second story.
The barn has not been painted and it has been leit just the way
Franklin DeSha built it, with its corn crib and stalls under Ts A .

located is room enough for wagons or tractors now.

Thiis old house is a combination of ridge a.id ,able roof and lean to.
On the side away from the like tliere are two gables on one Uect.on
,i:h t;o sections added on, both with gable roof, one slightly lower
than another. nd there are bay windows, and widows in odd places,
double hung, a screened porch on both ends. The foundation of the
house is made up of tricll pillars and lattice in between. .he roof
is tin.
Lhe old barn is similar to and looks as old as the Charlie ueSha
barn as it too has no paint, just weathered bo -rds.


To reach this residence turn left 2.2 from waldo, south on 301,
on to a graded road which cuts across to the paved highway toward
the canal bridge and goes on to nampton. iot too far past the
canal bridge is a wide graded road almost straight to the lake-
Little Lake santa re. In fact you can almost see it by the time
you are part way down the road.
To the right note a newly erected cattle pen on the right corner-
turn down this road and go to the end and on the left you will
see a numrner of homes, sole new,a nd the old irlitchell place.
iLhis road is oAD in rainy weather, not so bad now as i ritee this.

left just past his house and go down the
graded road until yousee a newly cleared

section with only palmetto palms out front.

years before and in the 1920 s when he

had a large pleasure boat and had numerous

parties.

The McGill-Nazel residence.
Years ago a mrs. 1icGill who had been an actress on the iew York
stage came here to retire.
*ihis is build of cement blocks. uharles ueSha's brother, rom,
brought out the loads of block and cement for the building.
ne was born in 1893 and was a young man wanting a job he may
have been in his teens. The house was built around 1910.
,he flat sides of the blocks are most noticeable at the corners
the uneven, decorative side shows making a pleasant pattern.
liewly painted it is an off white. he dark green trim color was
added in small quantities to make this very light color.
xhe front porch with cement steps has a painted red color carpet
effect down the st ps. ITe enclosed porch on the lake side and
on the opposite end have been added otherwise the house looks
much like it did when I first saw it in 1923. now some awning
windows replace some of the old double hung ones.
mrs. nuth nazel is most pleasant to deal with and will welcome
you if, and I am sure you will want to, go inside.




xo reach this residence follow the dirt, graded road, directly
to the lake in froAt of you past the trees in the middle of the
road, pass the cattle pens on your right and continue.

it serves the children of the area up to and including
the six grade. The principal is 1ir. hugh 11oe.
uohn Lear keorge, serving as a trustee of waldo school
.oatd, helped to sell the bonds, purchase the land
and build valdo s Ligh school.
-he school was completed in 1923 and the scenery and
properties for the stage of the auditorium were complete
soon after.
t was called ,aldo nigh school, then junior nigh school
and with integration and the upper grades being sent
to uainesville, it now serves both colored and white
to and including special classes and grades through six.
It is not in good repair, the walls inside and outside
need work and other work should be done on it.
,est of the building is the comparatively new octagonal
special classes building. as a whole the school grounds
appear to be in good condition. It is centrally
located in the residential section of towh.
-t is two storied, has a flat roof, the foundation
wall is directly on the ground, block or masonary, with
stucco.
he fire exit from the second floor serves as a sort of
roof over the east and west exit from the main hall ofand
on the first floor. xhe side porches are cement as is
the large, centrally located front porch, with its four
square pillars that reach to a line even with the tops
of the double hung windows of the second floor. zight
windows and a double door ( on the first floor) are
behind the pillars opening on the narrow porch. -en
windows on the east end of tae front and eight on the
west end, with twelve on the ends of the main school
building. Numerous windows, all double hung are on the
sides of the auditorium and the exit from the stage is
on the east side of the school. xrom the floor of the
auditorium doors are on the south end, the east and west
sides.
here is a blank wall directly above the porchpnd the name
of the school appears above it at the top of the building.
At the very top corners of the blank wallkbetween the
windows and tre corner) there is a decorative strip,both
horizontal and vertical neither very long, darker than
ttae white building.
