PAGE 3

John Turner Butler Blvd. / Highway 9A The Landscape at 70 senior capstone project 2011 There are many who have contributed to the success of this particular project. I would like to begin by thanking my advisor, Chris Lathrop; if it were not for her encouragement and beautiful ability to conceptualize the bare bones of a plan, the final design would never have come to realization. Jeff Caster, EJ Bolduc, Jeff Sugar, and August Schwartz, were there to answer the many questions that I had. They offered different perspectives to a project that I would never have imagined, Thank You. And for my midterm review, I am indebted to Glenn Acomb Lester Linscott Bob Grist, and Kevin Thompson for viewing the barest bones of an idea and still believing in me and that the final presentation would prove to be a good one. I would also like to thank Mary Padua and Terry Schnadelbach for the chance to learn and be inspired. I will never forget your wonderful enthusiasm for design. Kay Williams, a.k.a. Prof. K, and Tina Gurucharri thank you for your wonderful encouragement through my years at UF. Last but not least, my friends and family for always reassuring me that I have what it takes to be the best in all pursuits that I venture. You all are the reason I wake up every morning and walk out the door. Acknowledgements jeffrey byron hubbard

PAGE 6

John Turner Butler Blvd. / Highway 9A The Landscape at 70 senior capstone project 2011 Project Abstract The Introduction jeffrey byron hubbard The Landscape at 70 is a design exploration intended to create a pleasurable setting along the peripheral spaces of an interstate roadway. The belief is that this space can become a gateway expressing environmental and cultural conveyances that are inherent to the region, context, and site. Like most highway experiences the scale of the space is underdeveloped and lacking a proper aesthetic. Additionally, travelers on this roadway experience a landscape that has a volatile disposition with no consistency, no constant, just broken visual fragments. Utilizing the space of the r.o.w and portions of the adjacent properties I sought to blur the edge of the highway. No delineation of boundary, one that is shared by property owners and the travelers who use the site, will be apparent. The design is an artistic approach of landform that brands the space as the sawmill district. This scheme employs a simple plant palette of massed landscapes that are appropriate to the scale of the highway. The goal is to break the typical highway setting, break the typical horse blinder r.o.w stereotype, and to create a memorable and pleasant experience; perceived at 70 miles per hour.

PAGE 8

John Turner Butler Blvd. / Highway 9A The Landscape at 70 senior capstone project 2011 The Context jeffrey byron hubbard The Site: The area of focus is approximately 300 acres of highway right of way, and additionally contiguous acreage outside the r.o.w This area is more specifically described as a section of 9A from the gate parkway exit to the town center parkway exit, a section of John Turner Butler Boulevard running from the gate parkway exit to the Kernan Boulevard South exit, and where 9A and JTB blvd ultimately intersect. The site is a major boulevard traveled by many who live within or visit the city of Jacksonville. The site has existing vegetation consisting of mixed hardwoods, pine and oak species; the majority of the landscape is covered in sod. The water table is relatively high and there are a number of storm water ponds located on site. Outside the r.o.w are stands of vegetation; i.e. pine forests, hydric pines, and mixed wet hardwoods; informed from GIS data. There are town centers, residential neighborhoods, community centers, and a number of retail and restaurants contiguous to the site. The context around the site includes a number of areas that together, help define what Jacksonville is. These areas are either naturally occurring or are areas that express cultural and social concerns. As a traveler heads in any direction away from the elevated interchange they experience these highway and the Atlantic Ocean are more apparent to the east. North one drives through neighborhoods, town and commercial centers, and Trout River which dissects Jacksonville in two. Moving west from the study area, one leads closer toward the center of downtown with a variety of cultural entertainment oppurtunities South leads to more commercial centers and to I 95 interchange.
