INTRODUCTION

Presented here, in classified arrangement, are the chief bibliographic

tools available at the University of Florida for the study of Hispanic

America. This bibliography of bibliographies is offered as the first in

a projected series of convenient guides to the historical and descriptive

materials on Hispanic America in the University libraries. It has seemed

only logical, as the initial step in such a program, to bring together the

bibliographies already available.

One of the first tasks requiring our attention is to define Hispanic

America. As used in this study the term includes the area embraced by the

Spanish and Portuguese-speaking republics of North and South America,

together with those parts of the United States which once belonged to4the

Spanish Empire (i. e., Florida, the Southwest, and Puerto Rico), during

such time as they were under Spanish rule.

There are certain limitations which should be noted from the

beginning by the users of this bibliography. In the first place it

represents only a survey of materials in the general library of the

University and in the P. K. Yonge Library of Florida History. It is

felt reasonably safe to conclude, however, that any important bibliography

Son Hispanic America in the library system will be found in one of these

two collections.
-c?
Secondly, only cataloged materials are listed. This should prove

no hardship, since it is unlikely that any bibliography would fail to fall

9 into this category.

It should also be noted that this survey represents the holdings

J of the library as of January 1, 1949.
--i
SA very important consideration which should be borne in mind is

that this work is limited to separately-published bibliographies. Therefore

iii

many fine bibliographies which may be in other printed works, such as

secondary histories and publications of learned societies, are not

included.

Similarly, it should be remembered that only works dealing chiefly

with Hispanic America are listed. Bibliographies in which Hispanic America

receives only minor attention are omitted. In addition, works concerned

with America in general (e. g., Sabin's invaluable catalog) are not in-

cluded. Nor are the works dealing mainly with the British, French, or

Dutch West Indies listed herein. An exception to this general rule is

made in the case of bibliographies of Spain and Portugal in which Spanish

America and Brazil are included.

The problem of arranging the diverse materials covered by these

bibliographies has been met by classifying them first into three main

groups according to the purpose of the bibliographies. These are, in

brief, (L) form, (2) place, (3) subject.

First are listed the bibliographies based on form, that is, biblio-

graphies of government publications, of maps, of literary works, etc.

Then are given those inwwhich the primary basis of the compilation was

location of the materials. This may take the form of present location,

as in library catalogs, or place of publication, as in the guides to

book production in Hispanic America or in certain areas. Finally are listed

those bibliographies with subject themes. The subject may be a particular

nation or a general field of knowledge. Included here also are the personal

bibliographies.

Whenever a bibliography has suggested the possibility of classification

in more than one group, it has been placed in the first category following

this scheme of preferences 1. Form
2. Place
3. Subject.

IV

To return for a closer sBrutiny of the classification by form, the

first two groupings are bibliographies of bibliographies and bibliographies

of biographies, each of which includes but few items. In the next group,

bibliographies of government publications, the Library of Congress's current

series of guides to the publications of the Hispanic American republics is

significant and deserves special mention. The next grouping, bibliographies

of histories, is highlighted by Wilgus's bibliographic essay on Latin

American histories and historians.

The next form, literature, is well represented numerically. It

should be noted that in this case the word literature is used in the narrow

sense of"belles-lettres." Here we find the series of bibliographies of the

literatures of the various American republics, sponsored by the Harvard

Council on Hispano-American studies. Thanks to this series the literature

of Hispanic America is better represented in this survey than is any other

field of Hispanic American study. Also included in the literature group

are the bibliographies of English translations of Hispanic American

belles-lettres.

Next come the bibliographies of maps, with but few entries, and

then of manuscripts, with a much better representation. This latter group

is subdivided by location, according to whether the manuscripts are in

Spain, Hispanic America, or the United States. Next are the bibliographies

of periodicals, those of statistics, and, ending this section, those of

theseson Hispanic American subjects.

Part two of the survey is concerned with bibliographies based on

location of materials. First are given the catalogs of libraries and

private collections. Then are listed the guides to publications, whether

national in scope or devoted to all Hispanic America. These vary from the

noteworthy current guides, such as the Anuario Bibliogrffi Cubano,

to the historical surveys made by Jose Medina for Mexico and Santiago

de Chile.

The third main group of bibliographies consists of those based on

subject. Here will be found the many bibliographies on inter-American

relations and Hispanic America in general, including the annual Handbook

of Latin American Studies. Among the nations or regions as subjects, only

Mexico and Florida are well represented. Then there are several personal

bibliographies, especially for Simon Bolivar.

Then follows a series of general subjects: Art and music, geography,

law, etc. It is especially worthwhile to note the guides to the legal

literature published by the Library of Congress. Along with the Library

of Congress series on government publications and the Harvard bibliographies

of belles-lettres, this legal series is an outstanding example of biblio-

graphical coverage of a special field nation by nation.

As to the entry of the individual items within this bibliography,

the listing within each group or sub-group is alphabetical by author. In

almost every case the author's name is given in accordance with standard

library practice. After the authoritative author entry the title information

is given as found on the title page of the book in question. Place of publi-

cation, publisher, and date of publication follow. The number of pages is

added, or, if of more than one volume, the number of volumes. Indication

is given if the work is illustrated and, specifically, if there are maps,

portraits, or facsimiles. If the work is part of a series, the series

title is inserted. In cases where the library's holdings do not represent

the complete bibliographical entry, indication of that fact is made. In

gneeral no critical or descriptive comment is inserted, but occasionally -o

vi

a note may be added to clarify a vague title or give additional informa-

tion as to authorship.

Having available this information concerning the bibliographies of

Hispanic American materials the user, it is hoped, will be able to

select readily the bibliography or guide which he needs and will be able

jo proceed, through the author card in the library's card catalog, directly

to the book he has chosen to use.
