INTRODUCTION
Newell Hall occupies an important site on the University of Florida
campus. It was constructed in 1909 and is one of the oldest buildings on
the campus. The architects were Edwards and Walter of Atlanta, Georgia.
Originally of wood construction, the interior was removed in 1943 and a
new steel and concrete structure, designed by Rudolph Weaver, was
inserted in the shell.
This study of Newell Hall concentrates on the physical condition of
the existing fabric of the building, i.e. the original exterior (with
1942 alterations and the 1943 interior.) At the present time, the building
is functioning as office and laboratory space for the departments
agronomy, entomology, and soil science.
The study is divided into subsections: site, exterior, and interior.
The site section covers the relationship of the building to its site
and adjunct structures. Each elevation and the roof are covered in the
exterior section. Within the interior section is the largest volume of
material, where each space was visited and reported on on individual
forms. The type and condition of various features, materials, etc., are
noted on the forms.
It is hoped by those of us who completed this study that it will
benefit the university community and provide a basis for planning
continued use of this important structure.
