HISTORY AND FORMATION
The NATIONAL LIBRARY OF JAMAICA .NLJ).,
created under Section 5 of the INSTITUTE OF
JAMAICA ACT, 1978, officially started
operations on April 1, 1979.

On the recommendation of the National
Council on Libraries, Archives and
Documentation Services (NACOLADS) in its
PLAN FOR A NATIONAL DOCUMENTATION, INFORMA-
TION AND LIBRARY SYSTEM FOR JAMAICA, the
National Library is based on the collections,
staff and services of the former West India
Reference Library (WIRL),

OBJECTIVES OF THE NLJ are
summarized in the Plan as follows:

"... the storehouse of our culture
and traditions, the guardian of our
history and heritage and the well- :
spring of our cultural and economic
future. It must also serve as the
legal repository and national
reference source for all print and
non-print materials issued in Jamaica
and about Jamaica by Jamaicans else-
where".

The MAIN FUNCTION is to acquire, organize .
for use and preserve as part of the
national heritage a: comprehensive collection
of material, both.,print and non-print, relat-
ing to Jamaica and the Jama..an people.

ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE

The NLJ is administered by the Board of
Management appointed by the Council of the
Institute of Jamaica.
The National Librarian is Secretary to
the Board of Management and..an EX-OFFICIO
member of the Council of the Institute of

The NLJ is financed by the Government
of Jamaica. '" *


THE COLLECTION
The NLJ has inherited from the WIRL the
most comprehensive collection of materials
issued in and about Jamaica which now exists
anywhere in the world, and one of the most
extensive and important collections of West
Indian materials from the 18th and 19th
centuries including materials from Dutch,
French and Spanish territories.

The facilities of the National Library are
available to the public for reference and
research purposes..-.

SERVICES

NLJ collects publications that -are
printed or published in or that deal with
Jamaica;
acquires a selection of West Indian
material; .
organizes this material and provide
catalogues and indexes;
provides a collection of general
reference:works on open access;
gives personal assistance to reader
in using the catalogue and supplies on
request material from the stacks for use i
the library;


acquires material through inter-
library loan for use by readers;
answers reference enquiries and
carries out research requests made in
person, by telephone and by mail;
compiles bibliographies on
selected subjects;
provides photocopying and photo-
graphic services.

Nominal charges are made for some
of these services.

libraries, archives and documenta-
tion centres throughout Jamaica;

encourage the adoption and use of
international bibliographic
standards;
