1971 POPCORN ACREAGE UP 24 PERCENT

POPCORN: Popcorn plantings in 1971 total about 176,000 acres, 20 percent more than a year earlier
but 8 percent less than the total planted in 1969.

The acreage to be harvested in the 9 major producing States is up 24 percent from last year.
Growers in Indiana, the leading producing State in 1970, expect to harvest 39,000 acres, or 8
percent more than last year. All other major producing States expect more acreage in 1971 than
a year earlier. The total for harvest in Iowa this year is up 12,000 acres from 1970. The
"Other States" group expects to harvest 4,100 acres -- more than double the 1,900 acres of 1970.
Most of the increase is in Alabama.

The first production estimate for 1971 will be made in January 1972. This current report
includes revised acreage and production for the 1970 crop, based largely on data from popcorn
processors. The revised 1970 production of 333.0 million pounds is 10 million above the
December 1970 estimate but the smallest production since 1963.

The acreage to be harvested in the 9 major producing States is down 6 per-
cent from last year. Iowa, the leading producing State in 1971, expects to har-
vest 38,000 acres in 1972, or 10 percent less than last year. Indiana growers
expect to harvest 40,000 acres, 3 percent more than in 1971. Harvest in Ohio is
expected to be 3 percent more than in 1971, and Kansas 22 percent more. But all
other major producing States indicate declines from 3 to 21 percent. The
"Other States" group expects to harvest 2,900 acres, down 1,200 acres from a
year earlier with most of the decline in Alabama.

The first production estimate for 1972 will be made in January 1973. The
current report includes revised acreage and production for 1971 crop, based
largely on data from popcorn processors. The revised 1971 production of 561.7
million pounds is about 4 million pounds above the estimate published January
1972 in the 1971 Annual Crop Summary.

1973 POPCORN ACREAGE DOWN 12 PERCENT

July 11, 1973

POPCORN: Popcorn was planted on nearly 152,000 acres in 1973, 12 percent below
1972 and 15 percent below two years ago. Popcorn is expected to be har-
vested from nearly 147,000 acres, down 6 percent from a year ago and 15 percent
under 1971. Since 1950, acreage harvested has ranged from a high of 240,000 in
1958 to a low of 108,000 acres in 1963. In only five of the years since 1950 has
a lower harvested acreage been realized than is expected for 1973.

Indiana growers lead the Nation with 37,000 acres expected for harvest_ this
year, 6 percent more than in 1972. Iowa growers have 36,000 acres for harvest,
8 percent less than 1972. Nebraska with 24,000 acres is 14 percent above a year
ago. All otter major States are expected to harvest less acreage.

The current report includes revised estimates for 1972 based largely on data
from popcorn processors. The revised 1972 production of 521 million pounds of ear
equivalent corn is up less than a million pounds from the preliminary estimate in
January of this year. A decline in acreage harvested from the preliminary estimate
was more than offset by an increase in yield per acre. Unfavorable harvest weather
plagued growers and prolonged the season. The 1972 crop was exceeded only by the
1969 crop of 547 million pounds and the record large 1971 crop of 564 million
pounds.

The first estimate of 1973 production will be included in the 1973 Annual
Summary to be issued in January 1974. Included in the report will be a breakdown
of the production by method of harvest--ear picked and field shelled with the latter
in terms of ear equivalent corn.

1974 PLANTED ACREAGE UP 23 PERCENT

Planted acreage of popcorn at 189,500 is 23 percent above last year and
9 percent above 1972. The 1974 crop is expected to be harvested from 184,100
acres, 24 percent more than a year earlier and 17 percent above 1972.

Iowa leads the Nation with 48,000 acres expected for harvest this year,
37 percent more than 1973. Indiana, last year's leader, expects to harvest
34,000 acres, 8 percent less than last year. Nebraska with 33,000 for harvest
is 32 percent above a year ago. All major States except Indiana are expected
to harvest more acreage.

The current report includes revised estimates for 1973 based largely on
final data from popcorn processors. The revised production of 491 million
pounds is 4 percent above the preliminary estimate made in January of this
year. The increase from the preliminary estimate is attributed to a larger
acreage harvested and a higher yield per acre. The 1973 crop was harvested
under near ideal conditions which resulted in low abandonment and small field
loss of grain.

The first estimate of 1974 production will be included in the
summary to be issued in January 1975.

Popcorn Acreage Increases

Popcorn was planted on nearly 227 thousand acres this year, 14 percent
above last year and 47 percent above the relatively low 1973 acreage. The
1975 crop is expected to be harvested from 220 thousand acres, 17 percent
more than last year. If realized, this will be the largest acreage of pop-
corn harvested since 1958.

All States show sharp increases in acres for harvest from last year's
level except Iowa and Michigan. Nebraska leads the Nation this year with
48 thousand acres indicated for harvest, 26 percent above last year. In
Iowa, last year's leader, growers expect to harvest 41 thousand acres,
down 13 percent from the 1974 crop and Indiana growers also expect to
harvest 41 thousand, up 17 percent.

This report includes revised estimates for the 1974 crop based large-
ly on final data provided by popcorn processors. The revised production
of 515 million pounds of equivalent ear corn, 70 pounds to a bushel, is
3.5 percent above the preliminary estimate made in January of this year.
The increase is attributed to a larger acreage harvested than previously
estimated.

The first estimate of 1975 production will be included in the 1975
Annual Crop Production Summary to be issued in January 1976.

POPCORN ACREAGE DECLINES

"Acreage planted to popcorn in 1976 is placed at 219,200
acres. This is down 6 percent from the relatively large acreage
seeded last year but 10 percent above the 1974 crop acreage. The
current acres seeded is the second largest since 1958. The 1976
crop is expected to be harvested from nearly 212,800 acres, 5 per-
cent less than in 1975.

Acreage changes from last year by State are mixed, ranging
from-up sharply to down sharply. Indiana and Nebraska plantings,
where nearly half the 1976 acreage is located, are up 17 and 6
percent, respectively. In Iowa, the leading State for popcorn
acreage 2 years ago, growers cut acreage planted by 35 percent,
bringing the total to only 28,000. Acreage in Illinois is off
22 percent, Kansas is off 20 percent, Kentucky is down 3 percent,
and Missouri is off 23 percent, but Ohio acreage is up slightly.

This report includes revised estimates for the 1975 crop
-b1sehd"targely on final data provided by popcorn processors. The
revised production of 543 million pounds of shelled corn is 5 per-
cent above the preliminary estimate made in January of this year.

The first estimate of 1976 production will be included in
the 1976 Annual Crop Production Summary to be issued next January.

POPCORN PRODUCTION RECORD HIGH

Farmers produced a record high 602 million pounds of
shelled corn in 1976, 11 percent more than the 1975 crop and 57
percent more than in 1974. The increase resulted from very
good yields. The harvested acreage declined 6 percent from
1975. The average yield of 2,863 pounds is 443 pounds larger
than a year ago. Yellow varieties accounted for 89 percent of
the total 1976 production, the same as a year earlier but down
from 92 percent for the 1974 crop. Farmers field shelled 82
percent of the crop, equal to a year earlier but up from 77 per-
cent in 1974.

Weather conditions were generally favorable for the crop
from planting through harvest. A few areas became very dry but
timely rains and moderate temperatures made for excellent yields.
Good drying weather in the fall aided in rapid completion of har-
vest with moisture content of grain 1ow enough in some areas to
allow storage without artificial drying.

POPCORN ACREAGE DECLINES SHARPLY

Growers planted 156,300 acres to popcorn in 1977, This is
27 percent less than last year and 33 percent fewer acres than
in 1975. The acreage for harvest is estimated at 151,400, also
27 percent less than last year.

All of the major producing States recorded declines in
acreage. Indiana and Nebraska, where more than half the 1977
acreage is located, and Illinois had the smallest percentage drop
in popcorn acres. Most other States had acreage reductions of
30 percent or more as many contractors were shifting from dryland
to irrigated areas.

Acreage and production revisions of the 1976 crop are included
in this report. They are based largely on data provided by pop-
corn processors. The revised production of 607,832,000 pounds is
1 percent greater than indicated by the preliminary report issued
last January.

The estimated production from the 1977 crop will be included
in the 1977 Annual Crop Summary to be issued in January, 1978.

POPCORN ACREAGE DOWN 9 PERCENT

Growers planted an estimated 147 thousand acres (59.4 thousand hec-
tares) to popcorn in 1978, according to the results of a survey conducted
around June 1. This is 9 percent less than 1977 and nearly a third less
than was planted in 1976. The acreage intended for harvest is estimated
at 142 thousand acres (57.3 thousand hectares), 9 percent below last year.

Indiana and Nebraska remain the leading popcorn States with over one-
half of the Nation's total acreage. Indiana popcorn acreage is unchanged
from last year while Nebraska dropped 9 percent. All other States re-
ported a drop in acreage except Illinois and Michigan.

Final estimates of the 1977 popcorn crop are included in this report.
These revisions are based primarily on final data received from popcorn
processors. The revised estimates show 432 million pounds (196 thousand
metric tons) were harvested from 155 thousand acres (62.7 thousand hectares).

Average yield was revised to
report published January 16,
in 1976.

2,788 pounds, up 102 pounds from the preliminary
1978, but below the record yield of 2,925 Ibs.

Preliminary production and yield estimates for the 1978 popcorn crop
will be published in January 1979.

POPCORN PRODUCTION DOWN 8 PERCENT

Growers produced 398 million pounds (181 thousand metric
tons) of shelled popcorn in 1978, 8 percent less than the pre-
vious year's 432 million pounds (196 thousand metric tons) and
35 percent less than the 1976 production. Decline from 1977
resulted from a 9 percent reduction in harvested acres. Indiana
and Nebraska growers accounted for about 65 percent of the U.S.
production in 1978. Changes from a year ago ranged from a 55
percent decline in Kansas to a 12 percent increase in Indiana.
The 1978 crop averaged 2827 pounds per acre, 39 pounds more than
in 1977. Growers field shelled 93 percent of the harvested
acreage compared with 82 percent a year earlier. Yellow varie-
ties amounted to 94 percent of the total production, up from 89
percent in 1977.

Wet weather throughout most of the Corn Belt during the
spring delayed land preparation and planting. However, most
growers in Indiana had seed in the ground by mid-June. Late plant-
ings caused plant development to lag previous years but good weather
conditions during the fall allowed the crop to mature. Some areas
of Kansas, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee experienced drought con-
ditions during late summer causing reduced yields.

POPCORN ACREAGE UP SHARPLY

Growers planted an estimated 187 thousand acres (75.5 thousand
hectares) to popcorn in 1979 based on a survey of growers and con-
tractors conducted about June 1. This is 29 percent more acres than
last year and 16 percent above the 1977 acreage. Farmers expect to
harvest 182 thousand acres (73.7 thousand hectares) for popcorn, 29
percent more than a year ago.

Indiana and Nebraska continue as the leading popcorn States
with over 58 percent of the total planted acreage. All States are
indicating increased acreage except Kansas which has a small acreage.

Final estimates of the 1978 crop are included in this report.
These revisions are based primarily on final data received from pop-
corn processors. Revised estimates show 399 million pounds (181
thousand metric tons) were harvested in 1978 from 141 thousand acres
(57.1 thousand hectares) giving a derived yield of 2828 pounds per
harvested acre.

Preliminary production and yield estimates for the 1979 crop
will be published in January 1980.
