PHASE I 11u0

BUILT Ii IOS THIS TWO STOREY STRUCTURE WITH A FULL BASE-
MENT HALF BELOW GRADE WAS RECTILINEAR IN PLAN. THE
STRUCTURE EMPLOYED A WOOD FRAME WITH EXTERIOR WALLS
MADE OF BRICK. THE EAST AND WEST FACADES WERE COM-
POSED OF TEN BAYS. WHILE THE NORTH AND SOUTH HAD FIVE.
OPENINGS IN THE FACADE HAD SEGMENTED ARCHES. BUT FOR
THE SAKE OF SIMPLICITY. THEY ARE SHOWN RECTILINEAR. A
LOADING DOCK ON THE SOUTH FACADE WOULD LATER BE RE-
MOVED. A BUILT UP FLAT ROOF WITH A SLIGHT SLOPE WAS
CAPPED BY A CORBELED PARAPET. THE BRICK FRONTISPIECE
ENGAGED A SMALL WHIPPED ROOF PORTICO OVER A STOOPAT THE
FIRST FLOOR LEVEL. BENEATH A SEGMENTED ARCH ON THE
FRONTISPIECE WAS THE NAME OF THE COMPANY: LOZANO, NIS-
TAL & COMPANY 104

PHASE 3 (CONJECTURAL) 1916

HAVING NO VISUAL OR WRiTEN DOCUMENTATION TO COLLABO-
RATE THIS PROPOSED ADDITION OF AN ELL WITHOUT THE ADDI-
TION SEEN IN PHASE IV. THIS AXONOMETRIE REMAINS CONJECTO-
RAL. PROPOSED IS THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN ADDITION OF AN
ELL TO THE SOUTH FACADE OF THE ORIGINAL BLOCK. IT WAS
RECTILINEAR IN PLAN AND HAD THREE STOREYS WITH A FULL
BASEMENT HALF BELOW GRADE. THE ROOF WAS WHIPPED AND A
PYRAMID ROOF CAPPED THE SHAFT TO A FREIGHT ELEVATOR.
THE ENTRANCE TO THE LOADING DOCK HAS BEEN REOPENED
AND NOW SERVES AS PASSAGE INTO THE ELL
REASONS TO SUPPORT THIS PROPOSED ADDITION OF AN ELL
WITHOUT THE ADDITION SEEN IN PHASE 4
-THE EXTERIOR WALL THICKNESS OF THE ELL IB FOUR INCHES
THICKER THAN THE WALL THICKNESS OF THE PHASE 4 ADDI-
TION
-THE ELL HAS A WHIPPED ROOF WHILE THE PHASE 4 ADDITION
HAS A BUILT UP FLAT ROOF
-THE CORBEL BELT COURSE ON THE MAIN BLOCK AND THE ELL
DOES NOT RU CONCURRENT WITH THE CORNICE OF PHASE 4S
ADDITIONS PARAPET
REASONS TO DOUBT THAT THE ELL AND THE PHASE 4 ADDITION
OCCURRED AT SEPARATE TIMES:
-LACK OF ANY VISUAL OR WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION
-SURVIVING FLOOR PLANS HAVE BOTH THE ELL AND THE SUR-
VIVMNG FLOOR PLANS SHOWING ELL ADDITION AND PHASE 4
ADDITION HAVE CONSTRUCTION MEASUREMENTS WITH THE
TWO ADDITIONS OCCURING AS ONE
CONDITION OF BRICK IN EXTERIOR WALLS IS SAME IN BOTH
ADDITIONS
(

PHASE 2 CIRCA 1907

THE MAJOR CHANGE HAVING OCCURRED IS THE ADDITION OF A
THIRD FLOOR WITH A WHIPPED ROOF SUPPORTED BY WOOD TRUSS-
ES. THE ROOF HAS BEEN COVERED WITH RED CLAY TILES (LUOO-
WICI-CELADON CO.. CHICAGO IMPERIAL TILE). THE TOP OF THE
FRONTISPIECE HAS BEEN FLATTENED AND AND A CURVILINEAR
SIGN OF UNKNOWN MATERIAL WAS ADDED ON TOP OF THE FRON-
TISPIECE. READING LOZANO. SON A CO.. 1905. THE AFOREMEN-
TIONED LOADING DOCK HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE LOADING
DOCK ENTRANCE HAS BEEN PARTIALLY FILLED IN TO FORM A
WINDOW OPENING.

PHASE 4 (ACTUALIZED) 193

THIS I THE FINAL MANIFESTATION OF THE BUILDING AND IS IDEN-
TICAL TO PHASE 3 EXCEPT FOR A TWO STOREY. RECTILINEAR
SHAPED. TWO STOREY ADDITION ATTACHED TO THE EAST FA-
CADE OF THE ELL (SEE PHASE 3: THIS ADDITION AND THE ELL MAY
HAVE BEEN ADDED AT THE SAME TIME THE BUILT UP FLAT ROOF
OF THE ADDITION IS CAPPED WITH A PARAPET WALL AND A PE-
RIMETER PENT ROOF COVERED IN CLAY TILE. A PROJECTING BAY
WITH A CURVILINEAR PARAPET SERVES AS A BATHROOM. THE
ADDITION 18 SEPARATED FROM THE MAIN BLOCK BY FIFTEEN FEET
AND CREATES A HARROW RECTILINEAR OPEN COURTYARD WHICH
SERVES AS THE PRINCIPLE POINT OF ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING.
CONCRETE STEPS WITH AN OPEN PORCH LEAD TO A ONE STOREY
VESTIBULE ATTACHED TO THE EAST FACADE OF THE ORIGINAL
ELL. A CONCRETE PAD REMAINS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE NEW
ADDITION AS A REMNANT OF A WOODEN SHED WHICH WAS ONCE
ATTACHED TO THE BUILDING THE CURVILINEAR SIGN SEEN IN
PHASE 2 HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A RECTILINEAR SIGN BEAR-
ING THE PRESENT NAME: TAMPA CASKET COMPANY.
