April 11,1915,
My own dear Wifey,
Your undated"favor" recd. Just after I had written you. Am
getting reody now to go l" to the Glades again Tuesday* The plowis
about through Mr. Dyke's! land, and will then go upon mine. 'ad another
breakdown. The Crum-Poriter boys handling it, oase jA,*. town yesterday -1
to get it fixed. Expect it to be on my land Tuesday or sooner, Want *
to plant the I-nd to cow, ppasand then grane.hogs upon it. That seems to as
to be- one of the cheapest, easiestand safest way 6of getting a start on
the Glades. Others seeta much of the same opinion, too. The trouble with
most of the new comers is th thathey have been under such a necessity ,of get-
ting something onto the imar et in a hurry that they rushedinto the poish-
are things-- peppers, tomatoes, beans and eggplants-- which pay.well IF you
make a hit, but which are so liable toget front bitten. Then they lose -out
on these, and are in for it. I should rather play safe, and this is what I
am trying to do.

Cowpeas are fine for the land, and fine for hog feed. The hay
can also be sold a good prices. I can get hogs on Nita Island at low
prices( Native hogs.) Then by introducing a blooded.male ,I can get a
croes that will fatten easily and sell well. The hogs can get all or pr o"
t ically all the feed they need right on the farm, I can .-hiL1 them down
the canal on a barge at low freight cost, and sell them right here at
good price~. Mr. Lee of Torrey Id. was down recently with 16 hogs'raised
on the As.lind, fed on wild stuff growing there-- moon vines chiefly-- at
no cost to him. ie sold them for ,they say, over $900. I sa-' him here
and t'slked hog" to him.

I recd.a letter from L.to-day. ; s: hare at work putting
in more potatoes, and levelling the bank for the pulverizer. He has one
man with hirr now-- Mr. Wilson. Can't say how long we shall need him yet.
Some time, probably. .!e is a'good worker in the field, and a good cook.
He and L.get along nicely.

Our boat," Fruiterest", is a gem. No danger of explosions or
serious accidents. One,of course, must learn the boat, rnd keep its needs
supplied. I have been remarkably fortunate so far. I am learning, too.
The difficulties are nothing to what I might have encountered if I had bout
an old engine. t.ine is. fine. Peopl e praise it t or the skies.

Mr. Hoffman has gone to Neovnda,Mo.,to the 'elter ,Institute for
treatment. 1 am afraid he has been in a pretty bad way this time.. He says
he will take some land this time, at last. I have been carrying that
$2,000 lonn all this time, paying $ 10 per mo. interest-- hae money he
intended to pny in July,1913, nnd then couldn't, It is secured b his
bonda,, and is at the uneey TrustCo. I have told him that i-f he would
assume' the loan I would give him, in return, tracts e4,55,$6,and 57 in Sec.
35.( See opP.pp.ge.) This is about 28 acres,as against 80 acre which
he was to we had the other tim.., ever, this 28 is on thp canal, and
the situation i8s very different no what it was then.; A lot of seett

lent has come in. The Tp. line oanal hns been cut past us,and the new road
Follows its bnnk. Besides, the new RAIL ROAD seems to be -n absolutely
3URE THING, and that means that the 28 acres 9111 be worth a good deal
nor than the 80 was or seemed likely to be soon. You know, the depot
La likely to go in upon the S.%.corner of 74,which will put hit- right in
town. If I 'could hold all this l1nd in Sec. 35, it gould mnke us indepeni
sntly rich in a few years, I am sure. However, I hnve to sell sorne to
pay dqbts,in eluding what I owe the Stete on the land.

You know, I :ave not p-id the Stete for the south 1/4 section
35.( Opp.P.) I owe them $3,400 on thin,nnd pny $17 interest per month
on account of it. However, at present prices, and even if the R.R. shld,
not come,t'lis same B/4 see.less what I hnve sold is north to us nearly
$10.000. What do you thihk of that? I haven't bothered you with all the
details of business, but thi s will help you to understand what we may bemr
looking forward t With the R.R. there, this land will inevitably worth
a great ::eal more 'hpn those figures.Besides, we lhve 59 to 66 incls.
and 52 and 54,all paid for ,and also 6 and 8,totaling 69 acres more9
Figure thin at 4 75 per acre, and you hre more than $5,000 more. And $75
is a very reasonnbl- figure there now. Others charge as high asn $90
for lands no more desirable,or less so.

All the above leaves out of thie ac-ount the 125 acres of scat-
tered land bought of the l-nd companies. Some of this is going to come in
good pretty soon. The ne- canal and 1.R. are causing this. Then we
hnve 11 town lots besides, and are paying for one Fruitorest holding. So,
even if we have some debts, we have sor.:ething to the good. And with
the pushing of the development-- and no one is working harder then I to
push it-- all thi- is going to ripen up fast. The Iand in Sec. 35 in
practically ripe now. Ppl.who see it get immenan 'y interested in it right
away- Uy chief study now will be not how to get rid of it but how to leep
enough of it .

Yesterday, I bought 100 coconut trees, ready to plant Got
them "t big bargains- 10 f each. A few days before I had bought 2 at 75
4 eal I have 100 eucalyptus trees,nnd 20 nvoc-does. I want some Austral-
ian pines,too.

The store will be run b; Mr.Baker ,its owner.
There is irrigation on Davie, but not on our land. Vr. Dyke
intends to put in a plant, nd so does irr. Tilton.
L is a good letter writer, sure enough. lie is a bright boy'
People speak mighty well of him. It would do you good to see in '-hnt a bus
iness like way he goes about the work on our place. Ho is a hummer. The
frosts pretty enrly discouraged him, nt one timo;but ,I am opening up n
line that will make us independent of the frosts. Essex shape, another
splendid hog feed, he hnaal ady planted just before I came. It hns g one
through all the frosts nnd freezes since, and is one of the most encouraging
things one could isk fo r. L.'s hens are lVying finely. It looks as tho
his entire eligible list are laying an egg every day-- on might almost
imagine some of them were laying two each on some days. We get 30 j for
eggs. He sends 'hem downyand I market them.

It takes about 11 hours torfrom here to L.'s pl ce by our boit.
It is up stream, and last time we fncdd a fierce w.nd-- the big storm rag-
ing on the coast. Returning, we. save 2 or 3 hours.

_ --1 --

We go nearly as fast as the big boats.
I want you to frame your big picture and hnng it on the parlor
wall. If I had a parlor here, I would Ihng it hero. You ce'tiinly got
a barngin in pictures-- both in qual-ity and price. L.recd. the picture
