Dear L1r. Wills:

Your letter of the 15th addressed t :ir. Se'bybecause of
his absence has been handed to me for attention.

As you doubtless already !know Federal Farm Loans are being
made to the Glades Fariers through the Everglades Niational
Farm Loan Association at Belle -lade, Florida. In fact,
this association has made loans in other parts of the
County and in :artin County.

As regards the Interme'diate Credit funds let me say that
we are at this tine endeavoring to perfect the necessary
agricultural credit corpor-tion to make these funds avail-
able for the f a-ers. It is our hope that tnis can be
accomplished in time to 'e of service for the co-ndnL season,
but there is onee hindrance which it see is r:ay interfere
with this source of loans being very advantageous to the
far, er. I refer to one of the re uirerments of the Federal
Intermediate Credit BPik which iikes it necessry in a
great number of cases for tlhe f% -,er to provide crop in-
sigrnce as a p::otection for t *e loan made. The premium
rate on such insurance is at pres-nt ml:,lost!_rohibitive.
iVe are in touch with the "artford Insurance Company in
regard to this -.atter and expect to hove an interv-iew
with their Florida crop insurance e .: ert in a very short
time.

'.e shall be pleased to ::eep you advised as to the progress
we are -akinr and w:uld appreciate a personal coll from
you whenever you happen to be in the city.

Yours very truly,

Dear Dr. Will:

Answering your recent letter.

Mr. Langner tells me tb4t J. 0. Penney has formed an
agricultural credit corporation. Presumably you would have to
take the matter of a loan up with Mr. Burdette G. Lewis, whose
headquarters are c/o.Penney-Gwinn Farms, Green Cove Springs, Fla.

Hope that this information will be of some service to

you.

Dear Sir:

Have just seen Mr. Thompson with reference to his
making an address for you Saturday afternoon, and he feels
that it is presumptuous for him to appear on your program
at this time in as much as not enough has as yet been
accomplished to warrant spilling.

Please be kind enough to excuse him this time and
arrange for some other speaker, and he will be glad to
appear later.

Dear Mr. Will:

Your letter of July 31 with enclosures has been received.

The experiences of the recent applications for loans
which have been placed with the Everglades National Farm
Loan Association for aid from the Federal Land Bank have
not been the most encouraging, as all we have heard from
so far have been rejected. Perhaps the report on the
four from which we have not heard will be more encourag-
ing.

I am convinced that the salvation of the farmer's prob-
lem, which is most pressing at this time, is to be found
in the intermediate credit loans, but so far we have
not perfected the organization to make them.

I assure you that we will keep you advised as to the
progress we are making, we are

Dear Sirt

Your letter of July 31st to the Trustees of the Internal
Improvement Fund through Mr. Richard W. Ervin,Tax Agent,
has been received and was presented to the Trustees for
their consideration this morning.

The Trustees direct me to advise you that they will expect you
to pay all taxes of whatever description assessed against
the lands under contract of sales to you, and that they will
not continue the pa "ient of such taxes and the charging thereof
to your account. The Trustees desire that you advise them
promptly of the payment of these taxes in order that they may
know that title to the land is being kept clear, otherwise they
will be compelled to take such steps as may, in their judgment,
be necessary for their protection.

Very truly yours.

remember our talk both art .imli and 31e'.V'isto!i.

I an quite keenlyy sensible of the matters mentioned
in your letter but feel that the operations of the Southern
Sugar Company in this district are join., to in time eliminate
a great deal of the troubles of the Everglades.

I have carefully noted our descriptions of the
tracts of land th-i-t you have to offer near Clewiston a-id near
Lake Harbor wid I am taking the liberty of referring :,,our letter
in its entirety to Captain F. Deane DUff who, I feel sure, will
get in touch with you in re,,rd to any of these parcels of land
in which The Southern Jugar Comr.-anry nay be interested,

Yours truly,

Dear Dr:- i M,

Fver since the storm, they have jept me on the j
riding all day over all kinds of road is not the snap it a
to be, and at ntght am pretty well ired out, therefore the d
in answer to yours. "
When the Drainage force. s out to the bone the fira'
this month, I lost my job, but wa given the job of lookte M
at -Hillsboro canal, at .;55 a month, so Scott could call on mes
other work, an.: pay me by the day, and the first call was on
IIth, and have been working every day and Sundays up to date. '*L-
low in re our road to the Broward County line, the s
is about finished, and a right of way cleared up to the Bolle s
and now measuring from here to South Bay.
An old timer I know on the survey crew told me today t
it was his belief that the coonAfat would be let by the last of'i
Pept, so keep your eye open for the adv. .
Probably will be some rich pickings on this contract,.,
and if so, Hathaway wants his before he goes out of office. .
Huffman Co. started to haul rock to Belle Glade today-;.,
will work toward South Bay,
i Fe the pumps, Jeff told me positively the pumps wouldi.
the Okeelanta unit in time for next years rains.
The excavation is done, an.- the concrete material will. bUj
dumped any day, as the work is about done on the plant down the
uillsboro.
South Bay unit, pump housp at M.iami Canal, extends from
the !iami to this canal, north of te "three mile canal", three
miles north of the Bolles, to the l.ke, with the exception-of the
South Shore District. ,"
There will be two pumps at this station "6 inch diamdue.t
arn- each pump throws 60.0 Ugallons a minute, on i. average, depen A;,
on the water lift, but a minikgm of 5. 7000 gallons.
Okeel.--ta unit, the pux..ps will be on north line of Sea... 56
35, two pumps of same capacity. .:
'"A canal will be cut on the section line west to the Miamp
canal, the Pollqe road will be dyja and the ditch ends filled
I have never figured up the acreage, but probably I5.
in this unit, and when all,six units are in operation, a total of ,
* 54.000 acres will be under pumps.
Also two pumps for the triangle east of -re. ',
Tf would be impossible to drive from the lake to lock
probably the road surveyers wheel -racks, and the rass fire did
the damage.
S. bank account has been-verv low, or we "'d have sent '
before-I must be pretty well paid up, will look up rt checks .
Am leal tired so will o lose.
Sincerely yr-rs A

SB n,

'I'
