Dear Dr. Will:

The last two letters I addressed to you have remained
unanswered. I want to know what's what on this proposition and
unless I get some definite and satisfactory information at an
early date I will turn the whole thing over to our Company's
attorneys.

I am enclosing a stamped return envelope for your
reply.

Mr. Thomas E. Will,
Box 275,
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

My dear Mr. Will:

Appreciate the pains you took in sketching out these
plots of land in accordance with your letter of December 9th.
Have been held here with very bad colds and will not get away
for another two weeks, Shall be stopping at St. Cloud and it
is rather doubtful just when I will get down to see you but
hope to be able to do so.

In order to avoid confusion I am returning your letter
and would ask what the best price would be on the four parcels
taken together. The tract I have is the West half of S. E.
quarter of the S. E. quarter of Section 17, Township 45 South
Range 34 East. This is twenty acres and I have no idea whether
it is any good or not. It did occur to me that if more in the
same vicinity could be purchased at a low price I might be
interested. If, however, this is totally inaccessible, the
twenty acres is enough.

Would appreciate as prompt a reply as you can con-
veniently let me have and remain with best regards

Yours very truvy,.,

Eaton.

so badly tied up financially we cannot spare this amount. However,

both of us have rather sure sources from which we expect to derive

money within the next week or so, and if you can arrange to take

care of this entire balance within the nexj thirty days we can assure

you of the needed .unds by that time.

Yours very truly,

/

Dear Mr. Will:-

Have you as yet returned the corrected deed in the Holmes, Hayes,
matter to the Escrow Department of the Bank of the Bay of Biscayne?
If you have not done so will you please forward same to them at once.

I have the deed from Mrs. Hayes, with seal, etc, upon same, as requested
by the bank, and will have the completed title in a few days.

Mrs. Hayes has written asking me if you have returned your deed to
the bank.

It looks as if we would soon see daylight now, as to being through
with this matter.

Cordially, yours,

Dear Sir:

Mrs Ester J. B-llinger called on me and
informed me that she bought through you some 5 or 6 acres
of land in Palm Beach Co.at what you call Flint Crest and
that she had paid for this land in 1917, and that she had
never received her deed to this land.
Is there any reason why Mrs Ballinger should not
receive her deed to this land, if so would like to
be informed as to the reason.

Mr. Thos. E. Will,
229 Bryan Avenue,
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Dear Sir:-

We have talked over the matter of putting
over a drainage unit in section 16, and Mr. Rowe,
who is heavily interested in the matter, is very
much interested in the proposal but does not de-
sire to take any action without a very definite
statement of what the cost would be.

By cost, he feels we should have a price at
which a contractor will put in the work, so that
it will be definite, and not an estimated cost.

I am looking into this situation and am try-
ing to work it out and get some figures within the
next few days so something can be done on the mat-
ter.

Dear Mr. Baker:

Dr. Will has suggested that you are in a
position to mkae the repairs on the Okeelaata
school. Please let me have a quotation on
this wc~k in order that I may submit it to the
Board fhr approval.

The building needs to be restored to it's
foundation first of all. I am sure also that
the windows, doors and roof will need repairing.

Please give this your prompt attention.

Yon's very truly,

Mr.Geo*F.BenselPres*Chamber of Oommeroe,

Fla.

My dear Mr*Bensels.
In the Everglades News for the 21st.inste., .," Okeelanta' noteswe read.--
Two Red Cross workers were to be seen in Okeelanta twp weeks ago;this
is THE SIXTH TIME the organisation has examined int6 hurricane damage to
this unfortunate/ oommunitypwithout in any wise offering aid. Four months
sinoe the stormyet nothing of assistance toward repairing the homes has
been rendered to these stricken settlers. Irrevelant questions have been
asked at every visitationcoopious notes have been mailed to the Red Cross
headquarters by the investigating workers.-but here all ends* Surely
the Red Cross has a monopoly on red tape,"

The Red Gross sails under Federal Governnent colors. If the correspondence
here in my files were submitted to a U.S.Senatortogether with other data fur.
nished me here and in Miami--some more to-day from a public offioial.-an inves.
tigation might result that would math the Dougherty-Fall-Forbes business.
I am an old Government man myself. But of all the oases of governmental neg-
ligence of dutyand obtaining of money under false pretenses that I have.,.ever
seenthis series of experiences with the Red Grosesis, i think, the worst.
Whether I shall pass this &n to Washington,I have not yet deoided;but it
richly deserves to go there*
I am perfectly willing that this letter shall go to the responsible official,
in Florida.
The Red Gross started to raise 6#,000000 for Florida aid. They were indignant
because the Mayor of Miaai and Governor of Florida said things which ,they
olaimidout down their receipts.
Mr'Henry M*Baker's published statement( Florida Morning StarDeo*24l1926)
-shows that his organization received 5,477#254*1l9andof thisps.ent
2*1l28l957.683leaving a balance of t1i,48;2986.16
Where is this balanoe?.What disposition is t) be made f it? Why is it not
applied to definite, unquestionable oases like that at keelantat No good
excuse is possible*
The money wasted on most of those six inspection trips if applied to the re-
1 ief of the suffererswould,at leasthave helped in a measure. Four months
gone,and ,barring the 625.00 or #30.00 allowednothing but trips,questions,
and abandonment* Not even one jaok screw has yet been loaned with which to
replace houses off their foundations. Not one roll of tae paper or houses un-
roofed 4 months ago& The record is shameless! r

THE EVERGLADES NEWS
THE NEWSPAPER OF THE FLORIDA EVERGLADES
., W.uARD SHARP, Publisher CANAL POINT, FLA. WEEKLY-$2.50 A Year

Jan. 28, 1927.
Dear Dr. '.ill:

Your letter of the 25th:

My difficulties as County Commissioner are increased just
in the measure of people's high expectations of me. Had Mr.C.W.
Bell been nominated not so much wouldhave been expected of him as
is expected of me. Had Mr. Walter Greer been elected not as much
would have been expected of him as is expected of me. The best that
I am able to do will be taken as natter of course; the best that
is expected of me may be-unattainable.

Three hundreds thousand dollars of Palm Beach county money
is tied up in the Palm Beach Bank & Trust Co.; taxes will not be
paid as fully this year or next as was paid during the boom. You
have seen the statement of condition of Special Road and Bridge Dist.
No. 11 printed in the issue of the 21st. I need make no fresh com-
ment on that.

You may not know that men and women who served on the elec-
tion boards for the Rune primary and the general election in
November have not been paid because there was no money to pay them.

Providing money for right of way for the new Road No. 4 has
absorbed all of the money in the General Road and Bridge Fund.

What do you expect me to do-about Okeelanta?

No one in Okeelanta made any representation to anyone at the
county seat about bridges illegally taken out. The offense was com-
mitted before I went into office. I am not a prosecuting officer.
If no one at Okeelanta will go to the county seat And swear to an
affidavit on which an information is filed, what am I expected to
do and why do you call my attention to a matter of which I had infor-
mation before you did? Reading your letter and replying to it takes
time that would be given to constructive work if you would give me
time to catch my breath. I've attended four meetings of the Board
of County Commissioners this month and ridden nearly 1,000 miles.
I've know n of Okeelanta's situation every since I came to the county.
Don't act as if I had to be instructed as to my duties or informed as

to people on the Coast. kn'6w every man and woman at Okeelanta. They
are my friends and I am theirs. I'm going to do what I can when I can
but talk about alsace Lorraine and penal colonies won' t hurry nme p.

Yours very truly,
