PALM BEACH POST
D. H. CONKLING Daily and Sunday Leased Wire Associated
Managing Editor Press Service

West Palm Beach, Fla., Dec ember, 7, 1921.

Dr. Thomas E. -7ill,
Fort Laudi-rdale, Florida.

tMy dear Dr. Will :

I have your letter of December 5, together
with enclosures .

I believe we understand each other sufficienty-
to obviate the need of my going into a detailed reply to your
letter . Our -nderseta]di1.-e of the S-..:'lades situation and our
s,-.-np.thies and opinions are practically identical . great h
many things are done in 6.st Palm Beach a_-:inst the Everglades/
country which I do not personally S: ...-t:..lze with, but at -:he
same time do not feel-lilk ..l:in. the fu-L3 about it that I
would if I lived in C(.r-lanta . However, The ?.st has always
been dis.ocsu to be fair with the ::-e>:1:'. ds .

You can -understand that loyalty to ry
ora:-iization cD-:el3 me even in the face of the evidence
you ha.-:, sent me to say that I am sorry, and that to the
extent of my ability it will not occur again .

The m-gnagient of The South Florida loper /
c..a:o-s wifi the issue of DE.: mber 1> . If hfnat I have written
ab:,v is not deemed sufficient c::pla:at'ion, I trust '"u will
advise me and I will go further into the proposition .

-0 assured that the development of the
Eve_ ladess, and t,.lcularly the favored section in which you
are interested is vory near to my W -*t, and while loyalty to
the coast and its interests may cause ra at times to bT silent,
it shall be my purp:.s- and the purpose of Tio ?ui : ...- Post
and the South 'loria : -) ,loner to see that it gets a square
deal .
'_ .th ki:id -o-'nal regards .

Yours very sinc3:e .-,

Dear Sister,-
We hav your postcard from 3642 Douglas
boulevard, and do not know whether to address
you there or at the Lenox Hotel, so I am mak-
ing extra copy and wil send one to each place.
I just wrote a letter to Dr.Thos.E.Will
whom you know, and send you copy of it so that
you may drop him a line at Ft.Lauderdale,as
he is at present living there, with wife and
daughter, while working up a big poultry farm-
ing proposition for Okeelanta.
Dr.Will's son Laurence,is Captain and m
manager of the boat that plies from thete to
Okeelanta.
If you drop Dr. Will a line stating the
time you leave Chicago, and when you expect to
arrive at Okeelanta, he will no doubt see fit
to meet you at the train and conduct you to
quarters until the boat goes.
Adah and I wil be at Okeelanta,to meet
you and Miss Buff and see that you are cared
for,and take you over to the farm in due time.
Adah has written you in full as to what
to bring,so I wil oml say that I never saw so
fine a climate as it has been so far this yeaxz
It seems a little cool this evening so
we may cover up a fe*sG31 vines for fear of
a light frost. '
We are going to m,"orI hto Okeelanta,in
the morning and wil s. ver N1onday night so
as to get the mail.,"

Mr. Thos. E. Will,
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

My dear Mr. Will:

Thanks for your 'tter. I am sending for
Drummond's "Ascent of Man" but my impression it that he went
f-rther than the facts justify in conceding the claims of
evolutionists. Effort has been made to reconcile Darwinism
with the Bible but it has failed and we are beginning to see
the fruits of that effort. Men calling themselves theistic
evolutionists have so diluted the Bible that it does not con-
tain as much inspiration as permitted beverages do now of
alcoh.1l--one half of one half. More than half of our promi-
nent scientists do not believe in a personal God or a personal
immortality and a very considerable e percentage of our young
men abandoned their Christianity during their college course.
I will send you a copy of my speech on Darwinism which w 11 be
out soon. I am very much interested in this subject because
as I have visited colleges I have seen the effect of evolution
(the only part that I am interested in and it is the only part
that people pay any attention to is evolution as ap lied to
man which attempts to connect man with the lower animals) While
God could make man just as well by the evolutionary method there
is no evidence tha t he did do so. and I think the hypothesis
constitutes such a repudiation of the Bible as to impair the
faith of evolutionists in other parts of the Bible. We can
better judge the fruits of evolution now than they could in the
time of Drummond and I note a very distinct reaction among our
churches.

I think the Peace Conference is going to administer the
death blow to Neitzsche's doctrine thich was built on Darwinism
and the Christ whose yoke is going to be substituted for the
devil's yoke is % not the Christ to6 whom the more advanced evolu-
tionists deny both a virgin birth and a resurrection. But I
did not start to write an argument. I will send you my -irguient
when the new edition is out.

Meantime let me thank you for bringing Drummond's book to
my attention. I will read it soon.

Very truly yours\

Dear Dr. Will:-

I am writing to headquarters for information
concerning the dasheen as I know you know more about this
crop than anybody else. What I want to know is what do
you consider a fair average yield per acre. Is the dasheen
suitable for the manufacture of potato flour and what is
its starch content? Where is the best market for the
dasheen today, if any? I have heard it stated that the
dasheen is unusually hard on land. Is there anything to
this?

I believe that somebody connected with the Bureau
of Plant Industry is interested in the development of the
dasheen. Can you give me this party's name? I will cer-
tainly appreciate any information you can give me on this
subject.

We are making good progress with our sugar mill
and have practically all our material on hand. We have had
" a good many transportation troubles, but as we expected them
we have not been'disappointed.

Dear Mr. Will:

I have yours of the 8th. I thank you for writing
me so fully.

In regard to the two tracts numbers sixty-two and
sixty-three, with the undivided interest in a central square
belonging to the Comins estate as purchased from the Fruit
Crest association, dt I understand that according to your
plans you wil. bUy these lots, paying the original-invest-
ment plus a six-per cent interest on the money from the time
it was invested? The two holdings were purchased in the
year 1914, seven years ago, and I understand approximately
$715.00 was paid for these. Is it your plan to pay six
pez cent on this investment for the seven years?

I am interested in what you write in regard to
the develop-ment of the drainage system, and the improvement
of the land. I shall be glad to receive an early reply from
you.

My dear Dr. Will:

Please accept my thanks for your very kind letter of the 14th.
We had a great battle, and we certainly went down with all
colors flying. It is possible that we were a little ahead of
the times. Certainly I hope that Miami will, a little later,
rise up and demand the things which we tried to give it.

Please accept my congratulations on the splendid pioneer work.
which you have done through the years at Okeelanta. We shall

Dear Dr. Wi 1:-

Thanks very much for your letter of recent date
and the enclosures it contained.

I am writing to Dr. R. A. Young today and attempt-
ing to get additional information.

It certainly does look as though there ought to
be great possibilities for the dasheen, but it must be along
staple lines and not be in the luxury.class..

I. was interested in noting what you had to say
about the poultry business as I was at Mr. Jones' farm last
week and was very much impressed with the way he handles his
proposition. It only goes to prove that you can't keep a
good man down.

With the season's greetings, I am

Yours very truly,
