an iteT.:izej.L_ a-.tement is nolt .u!red. It should be possible
in some ro'iil nuaitbers to show wh.:.t was the general tzend.of
these expenditures in usiri p what was used up froi the gen-

"ht part of the resolution above iqu tcd which says:
"If necessary to sell all land. remaining unsold in Section 27
at a small 'dv:nc- above origi'Li,_oost in order to complete
the .--.nits to the St::te" is the outcome of the opinion that
if 'o, h. d not raise;, the bonus on the lots to so high a fig-

the obli.,tion to the State, an-i r'.i it ..ossible to give
individual deeds to the Nurch;rsers. Note that in i;: "inr this
I am trying to report accurately and frankly the i1ot iye that
lies back of the resolution, as 1 interpret that motive.

There is another consideration that nay be given to the
-uestionkof your obligation to the tjate, and the possibility
of closi-g the contract. You are noJg.liged to bu-,._the whole
Spotion. If -ou f:ll short of doinr that you fofeit the 340D
which --ou paid as a guarantee so that the land paid for will
ha.-Lve cost slightly more than ..0 an acre. In other woris all
that -ou are bound to p:y to the State is .,.liO, after which
S-ou '.ill be entitled to a quittance, and will be in a position
to be able to giv-e.eeds to.aev-,F;- one.

p

One matter that has received attention is this:
You h-ve sold. lots in parts of the section where you have not
-et xeceive-i .itle, and if -oa were to fall short of p,,'ing
fox the whole section, and close tour contact with the 3tate,
i would never -.et title to .these lots. It would then seem
ti'o be necessary to substitLutea lt2.s in the parts of the Section
for ohich you had paid.. This would require a deal with persons
::.ho wouln' be lisal',ointel because of not being able to retain
the lot which, the,: h!fd selected. It is t6 be hopel that such

Sorve persons said at the meeting that the: would not be
willing to bu- arnr" land in Fruitorest for which they could
not get a jee1 iu'ne-iately;.moreover that they would notbe;.,
I.id i'.A not been willing to endeavor to getLan; one e.lse "to
bu- uit.ler those circuristances; but that if the land could be
:* ii for to the iStare, and deeds c..ul.1 be obtained that they
, would tiv, Lnd expect to succeed, to find additional purchasers.

Your xro-nosal, "To acPree to z -.aj .se at present selling
iirice, plus six per cent. interest per annum," seems to require
Comre elaboration. It is evident that you ccennot re-purchase
now, or you wolld not need to induce :any one else to purchase
now, and .-- the offer therefore must relate to sore indefinite
future, when, if prospects brighten, the l-'n... would be worth
-'ore, .icssibly, than present price with six per cent. per annum
ad.de1l. This does not seem, therefore, to amount to ?n: p&r-
ticular inrl.ucereeLt to mn" one to purchase now.

If I might possibly a more now it would require more
time to say7 it thLn would justify the delay in responding to
--our letter of October 1. I w&ll therefore close now.
Yours cordially,

B: Pickman Mann.

31 Tea Street Northwest,
Sat. Nov. 5, 1921.

,My dear Professor Will:

On looking over the photogravure section of The Star one
Sunday last spring, I came across this page of "tin-can tourists" and
laid it safely away to send to you sometime when I had time to write
a note to accompany it, and as sometimes happens, it was laid away so
safely that it failed to show up and I forgot about it until it came
to light recently while I was cleaning out my desk. So I will send
it along for vhat it may be worth in the way of suggestion relative
to luring these tourists on to vacant Everglades lands through an ad-
vertising campaign, if feasible, as I have read articles to the effect
that the hotel interests are of course united against them and are try-
ing to keep them off of all of the earth that they can. I do not know
whether there is anything in this suggestion that is worth considering
Or not; if there is, you've probably thought of it long ago, and if not,
forget it.

I was told by Mr. Holden that you had sent him a leaflet ad-
vertising the dasheen to supplant the potato, and I asked him to let
me see it, which he did. If you really want to introduce that vegetable
to the residents of '.a-shington, I' would suggest that you get up a leaf-
let containing all the facts therein included relative to the dasheen,
but make the appeal general and not to Everglades owners. Then get a
list of presidents of the Citizens' Associations here (and there has
recently been a big drive for membership, with good results, I believe)
and send the leaflet and a mimeographed letter to each one with the re-
quest that the subject be presented at their next meeting. Incidentally,
I might mention that the name dasheenn" is a little unfortunate, as so
many people confuse it with "dachshund" and think I am trying to "boost"
the sale of German dogs!

I do not know that either suggestion herein contained will
be of the slightest value, but they are offered for what they are worth.

Very respectfully,

t LcL^^C

Dr. Thomas E. Will,
Oeelater, Florida.

My dear Doctor Will:

I received your letter, with descriptive folders,
this morning, in which I am very much intqasted. -For the
past couple of months, most of my time has been spent out
in the field, and tonight I will leavgagain for the north.
and will look this matter over and think-about it, and if
I can see my way clear, will do whatever I can in the way of
assisting your project.

I am very glad, indeed, to know that things are
beginning to look hopeful, and I am sure that country has
now started to come into its own.

With regard to my bout getting out letters
for you, it will be almost imposaije.pnow, with the work I
have taken on, to do anything of this kind, because I am
not at home long enough to be able to do anything.

Sincerelyo urs,

Mr. Thomas E. Will,
Fort Lauderdale, Marida.

Dear Mr. Will:

I have yours of the 10th with your receipt for $36.36
-taxes pn the two holdings belonging to the late John S.
Coins exKtate, and purchased from the Fruit Crest Association.

I am interested in what you have written concern-
i- g the falue of the different tracts of land belonging to
this-estate. I appreciate your kindness.

I note that you value the two holdings in the Fruit -
/(Crest Association at $6gQ,00 each. Can you get me a buyer far
these holdings at that price? Please let me know at your
earliest convenience.

I thank you for the folders you sent. I have been
looking forward to an opportunity to spend a little time in
Florida and look over the land situation for myself. Let me
know how soon I could dispose of the twelve acres.

Another matter; taxes for the year 1921 will soon
(be due. Will you kindly tell me what the taxes are on the
wo holdings in Fruit Crest.

Thanking you for pur courtesy, I am

Yours very truly,

Canal Point, :Lv., 17, 1981.

Mr. T. E. Will,

e ear Mr. Will:A

I have some unfini.-,ii':. business in your to.-r.,

.n. w:D.er whether y-'u have the -ii. or .vould care to lock :i.t+r it for
/
me. Briefly it this. J.iny. 5th, I 19, I bought at the o'urt housee in

/'t. L-uj.rdale, Dr-in r.e tax certificates to lands r.:gatin; ..or than

6. ,00 acres. These lands lying on both sides of the South Ni..-

Iriver cinalnear its western end x1" at its junction with the iiami cirJl.

At the time of the purch-se they did not give me

/t-x certificates, said they would make them out and .3end to me later,

but .up to date I have not succaeelI in gettingg them to deliver then to

me. It sees to me that for some rea-on, they do not

vrant :i.3 to have them. Probably desiring the l-se of time to cancel my

>ri ht. I do not know the li,.v on this subject. 'her. I purclaedj thee

certificates, I .%ao prcmrised, in writing, by the Broward Co. Dr'ir je

District people that the Court Noualdmake me Deeds to all the lands re-

.rin nr,_ unr, lj.3e;,d aft r thie l-.,t. of orne e-r,

". V.Helm redeem-e som six tho.ind acres, a day

or two before the year was up. This was done by me giving Power of Attor-
/ney, for this purpose only, to Jaaes S.Rickards. This left me something
over a.C'0 acres not _dee:r.ed. iAnd I wi si to acquira.title to this la 1.
If time nullifies my claim, then I want such pro-
c.inedinge instituted as will kaer alive my claim, and ccrrpel them to deliver
to .-s deeds to this land.
I wish you could, irzimediatele see tax collector Bery-
hill, ind in my behalf make formal demand for these taxceertificates, then
proceed with whatever is necessary to get_ thb daeedl.
It vlill probably be necessary to employ an Attorney,
and if this is the case, then I should say such an one should be sezcteda
SBay suh an o

T.F.W. / /

40ho is t too close a friend of W.C.Kyle nor the higher officials

of th toward Co Drainage District. I have reason to believe that if

de.,3 to this land were given to me ,it might give them a little trouble.
So it is but natural to believe they will throw all obsta-

cy in the way. It might be necessary to engage an attorney from the stat
lIshould not be necessary unless they pervert the law.

,/ This land will be valuable. I do not want to lose it.

.he records should, show my purchase It should also show the part redeem-

S 'el. I believe the taxcollector is compelled by law to give tax certificate

Sbon i.fice purchaser, or his order, With these in your possession, lean.

I e'nx.t -3ter, and if you wish to assist me please take it prcn-ptly.

.,' Very sincerely yours,

BOARD OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
PALM BEACH COUNTY
WEST PALM BEACH. FLORIDA

November 23 1921

Dr. Thomas E. Will
Ft Lauderdale
Florida

Dear Dr. Will:

Since it is impossible to keep an eye on the Okeelanta school

from such a distance as Ft. Lauderdale the Board think it advisable to

have a Supervisor who resides in the neighborhood of the school and

one to whom the teacher can go for any assistance and forthe signing

of her monthly reports, et cetera. Therefore it is incumbent on me to

ask you to send your resignation so that we can pursue the subject

and get a petition for your successor. This is not done in an unfriend.

ly spirit as we know what a great interest you have always manifested

in the -Okhelanta school, It is a mere matter of convenience and

also uniformity of conditions and requirements.

Very truly yours,

Superintendent
