Dr. Thomas E. Will,

Okeelanta, Flae

My dear Doctcr Will:

Y,,urs. :f Aug'ist '5th 4~ before meo

You will. be gla lI. krh-w, I bel.vw, tha- I am able to he up

and dictate this ackrwle2igment of "our srnra'-hy an '-.rter-1, anr, further, that

I have suffered no brc.e.e- bones, 'n-. +' t.tte cuts ind bruises.are prae ic .1l.

he ledI In a fev days I -.vill %e at office quite as well as ever

I have rea' c-refuIll- y-u.r lJet"er, ,n-! apj recia.t the sit'lA. ti-on

you are in. I am extremely anxious :' : 'ou sh ill bs abtle to avah.1 yi.reos-ves of

the f icilities afforded by the Farm Loan Act. You nust I-ear in minrid ti absolute

security is essential for the success of tv1i system. In o-her word g you nmus': 'ut

yourself in the place of the bank. They have to figure that suppose t'he d e. comes

to the worse, and borrowers are not able to keep u;,- their paynmen+--woAi2ld they be

able to realize_..ror.T :;ly and fuly on the security offered? Assu-..in that Ever-

glades lands are 'rin; .0, big prices froa time to time, or what appeur to be big

prices, would the .inds nartg .g.d to the bank at force:\ sale bring the bank out

whole? Thatis the quas+ion they must constantly keep in mind.

All, it seems to me, the, could ask is a demans 'ration of what

can be rroluced, in 'Lhd first laee, ani, in the next place, what can '-e reasonably

expected as a return, net, from that ;.ro-uction. In o-her words, the lands may

be ever so productive, but ift for lack of .rjnasoratien, or ability to ma rket

successfully or excessive carrying i chrges the hrolucer st 4 ge netrglrn

he would' be unable to keep up his payments long. Of course, thi3 con.iticn cannot

continue for 1 gr3a. while as there will be found a way to overcome the overhead

Vand burdensome expenses, because the countrLj Lede thjuAoduct, and it wil. become

Irofjtable to afforA trn sport.,tirn ,11 mrn.rketing facilities*

A few :,ryrs -:*.o pro -uctrs were depenlent on comrissiori houses. Now

the commission houses anv 'obbers send the '-uyers to .th fields. L..-3t year celery

growers around Sanford and truck growers around Wauchulaq X 1:row, sold their product

in the fieldl--that is to say, buyers were there with' the check booke, anr' bought the

stuff as it *as crated# pa-ing cash. It wa s no-: an uncoonio thing for celery growers

to be paid $5.00 per cmra for some 700 to 90 eraes% per acre5 on the ground.

It. may take a little time for you to get to this point in the Gladese

but itwill come* In the meantime, you may have to to a little slow again, with com-

paratively small loans, and work up. As soon as you can denonstrate? whvit you can

do, if you are not already in :-osition to do that, I am sure the loans will be larger

and more readily allowed.

I will be very glainto take up the matter with President Houston of the

Federal Land Bank at Columbia, South Carolina, and ask him to have his appraisers make

a careful examinaton and study of conditions and I believe that wherever farmers are

giving careful and effective attention to their arms, and producing satisfactcr 91.resIlts,

and have reached a condition where the bar can be assured ofnork, loans will be

allowed.

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering
Everglades lards to you because I B!LItVE IN IT, because I BELIEVg
that, while it is now selling at $50, $80, and $80 an aore in ten-
aore tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an aore. The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's-great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international -,
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineer s is ehind'this
great reclamation project. Please investigate it. Above ALL things
get some of it BO0 and reap the benefit of near-flture vales. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you oalnot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you.

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Ecur'sions rtn out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one of our stereopticon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruit and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analysed and prove to your own satisfaction
just whaL it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employs in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We can refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

We can help you to pay for your land -- ooae and let mu explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste paper
basket. Please read- it carefully, then pass it along by so doing,
you will not only accommodate us, but your friends still more.

Come and see as at your lunch hour, or on your way home from
the office. We are centrally located, on the ground floor. Our
address is 809 G Street, 1. 1., -- Ouray Building, opposite the
Patent Offioe -- our 'phone number is Main 4680. We shall always be
glad to see you and explain things to you, whether you buy or not.

Dear Sir:-

You will be int rif i to know that the work of reclaiming the
Florida E.erliaijs is a:'r.nciin by leaps and bounds.

The Ful .,-Clark Construction C..purnv, a leader in its line, is
,:-.a-i!",7 the work with extraordinary skill and vigor. Six great dr- i1es are
working night and day, and several more are expected soon to begin.

Visitors, constantly c :ili'-. to us from the 'Glades, are enthusias-
tic over the work and thb outlook for the investor and homeseeker. One hub-
stantial business man declared at one of our irfeiiv's that the buyer is
"sure to win," and that "the only question is as to how much he will make."
Ti President of the State University of Flori,-i visited us recently, and
testified to Fiis faith in E.'r.i' ,e ', lands. Two men who have actually
crossed the 'Glades ne, over i., -'.t years ago, and the other, later -
have. recently call ', and stic::-ly confirmed our statements regarding the
character of the lands and climate. Still others tell us that we understate
the facts, and that "the half has not been told."

Not long since, one callerbought of us ten acres, then twenty,
then another ten, and started for Miami. After seeing the lands, he wrote
us for twenty acrec more.

Dear Sir:-

You will be interested to know that the work of reclaiming the
Florida Everglades is advancing by leaps and bounds. -" <

The Furst-Clark Construction Company, a leader in its line,' is '
handling the work with extraordinary skill and vigor. Six great dredges are
working night and day, and several more are expected soon to begin.

Visitors, constantly coming to us from the 'Glades, are entiusias-
tic over the work and the outlook for the investor and homeseeker.. One sub-
stantial business man declared at one of our meetings that the buyer is.
"sure to win," 'and that "the only question is as to how much he will make."
The President of the State University of Florida visited us.recently, and
testified to his faith in .Everglade lands. Two men who have actually
: crcGsed the 'Glades one, over twenty years ago, and the other, later -
l-a';e recently called, and strcn.ly confirmed our statements regarding the
character' of the. lands and climate., Still others tell us that we understate
the facts, and that "the half has not been told." .

Not long since, one caller bought.of us ten acres, then twenty,
then another ten, and started for Miami. After seeing the lands, he wrote
us for twenty acres more. i. :: '

Everglade'.la'nds are going fast. 'Within a year, one tract of
-64,000 acres, andtanother of 180,000 acres were sold; another'of 46,000
acres is now almost gone, and thousands of acres from other tracts have als*
been sold.

The prices have risen from $24 and $30 to $40 and $50 p6r acre..
Our fifty-dollar land is now almost'gone, and buyers can afford,to waste no
time unless willing to purchase at $60 and $80 per acre, at which figures,
also, we have lands to sell. .

'Our office is now at 809 G Street, N. W., in the Ouray Building,
one of the best office buildings in the city. We are on the ground floor,
and have a fine window with southern exposure, in which are displayed choice
products from the 'Glades. Crowds stop, day and night, to inspect it, Our
lantern lectures, reinforced by new slides, are given Tuesday, Thursday, and
Saturday nights, and'are finely attended.

We shall be glad to welcome all our friends, old and new, to our
new headquarters. To those who have not yet bought we can present THE op-
portunity of a life-time; to those who have, we can outline one plan which
will simplify their task of paying for their lands, and another, for obtain-
ing revenue therefrom.

Very truly yours,

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering
Everglades lands to you because I BELIEVE IN IT, because I BELIEVE
that, while it is now selling at 350, $60, and $80 an aore in ten-
- acre tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
: State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project. Please investigate it. Above ALL things
get some of it NOW and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
ean be worked for you.

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Excursions run out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

profitable evening as our guests. Come and see our soil exhibits,

just what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were maae
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. Ue can refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from

that, while it is now selling at $50, $60, and $80 an acre in ten-
acre tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
Stata of Florida pnd that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride,in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international ,-
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project. Plase investigate it. Above ALL things
get some of it NOW and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you.

Make up:a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Excursions run out cf Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one -f our stereoptioon lectures notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and speni pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and'see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- thke a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just what it i* and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We oan refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

We can help you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
ho we can do this.

Dear Sirt

We feel sure that you will be glad to know that the
Annual Livestock Roundup will be held here at the University, October
14 to 17, 1919, which will be held under-the direction of Cooperative
Demonstration Work.

If you attended.last years' meeting, I am sure you will
recall with pleasure the very pleasant and profitable time spent here
last year.

The program for the coming meeting is not yet complete.
However, we have the promise of enough good men already to insure a
stronger and more interesting program than we had last year.

One new feature will be added to the program this year,
That is the program for one of the days will be of special interest
to women. Of course, the ladies will be welcome at all the.meetings,
but one session will be of especial interest to them.

Remember that the weather in October is fine and "our
bad roads" should be in good condition by that time so we suggest that
you begin now to plan your work so that the whole family can make the
trip to Gainesville and spend two or three days.

Talk to your neighbors about the meeting and arrange
with them to make the trip with you. There are plenty of rooming
places and good accommodations in Gainesville. The University will
be in session and give you an added pleasure.

Very truly yours,

Dr. T. E. Will,

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Dear Dr. Will:

Such a bad report came in from the Okeelanta

boat after it had been raised, that the Board decided to remove

the engine and junk the hull. They directed me to ask you to

find out what it will cost to transport the pupils to lmn

Ole elanta school and the High School pupils to South Bay, and

let them know at your earliest convenience.

As this is an extra expense and not provided for

in the budget, I feel .quite sure that if the amount is large

they will drop the matter and allow the pupils to get to school

in any manner their parents provide for them. They had contem-

plated that the school boat would be used at a very small expense

to the Board, but since the boat is worthless after having seen
did
such ill-treatment they dm not feel very generously inclined

when the matter was brought to their attention the other day.

I will be glad to hear from you at your early

convenience.

Very truly yours, /

Moore Haven, Florida,
September 8, 1919.

Dr. Thomas E. Wills,

Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

Dear Doctor Wills:
I appreciated your letter of the 3rd
very much.
Mrs O'Brien was exceptionally interested
in its contents, and expressed the thought that we should
organize as soon as possible. Sometime this Fall it would
be well for all interested in the Everglades to get together
and plan some means for developing a protective organization.
The Glades County fair which will be
held in Moore Haven November 6th, 7th and 8th will furnish
an opportunity for such a meeting. Can you not arrange to
be present? Are your people planning an exhibit at the
Fair? I believe it would be good publicity for your Town
if you would make an exhibit. The Railroads are offering
reduced excursion rates to Moore Haven for the Fair, and
many people throughout the State are going to take this
opportunity of seeing the products of the Everglades, and
to meet the Representatives of its various sections. I
understand that many communities all around the Lake have
all ready agreed to exhibit. I feel that your community
particularly should be well represented if possible.
I do not know of any snag having been
struck in the Railroad proposition. True it is, that some
of the Ritta people are opposing this road and endeavoring
to block it by means of members of the I.I. Board. I am
going North the last of this week to arrange the financing
of the road, and trust upon my return I shall be able to
give you some definite information.

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering.
Everglades lands to you because I BELIEVE IN IT, because I BELIEEV
that, while it is now selling at $50, $60, and $83 an acre in ten-
acre tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE'WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price Is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project. Please investigate it.- Above ALL things
get some of it NOW and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else 'in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you.

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Excursions run cut of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one if our stereopticon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of'magnificently colored slides, some of which were mace
from photograph' taken by an employee in the Government Printing

We can help you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
how we can do this.

Come to one 3f our stereopticon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend % pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with' you, have'it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We can refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

We can help you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste paper
basket. Please read it carefully, then pass it along by so doing,
you will not only accommodate us, but your friends still more.

Come and see us at your lunch hour, or on your way home from
the office. We are centrally located, on the ground floor. Our
address is 809 G Street, N. W., -- Ouray Building, opposite the
Patent Office -- our 'phone number is Main 4280. We shall always be
glad to see you and explain things to you, whether you buy or not.

SERvICES AT II A. M SUNDAY

OBJECT*
Ti le. peoptA's il.urtil THE SER.vCE OF HUMANITY
FOUNDED OCTOBER 4, 1 B91

S WASHINGTON. D. C.
31 Tea Street Eorthwest,
3un. 3ept. 14, 19.
REV ALEXANDER KENT
FOUNDER
Dr. Thos. U. 7;ill,
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Dear Dr. 7ill:

You may perhaps recall my writing to you once
that Ar. 1dackenzie'3 death and consequest expenses
and lack of income rendered it impossible for me
to keep up the taxes un my ilorida land, and you
wrote back that you had advPnced the amount neces-
sary to hold the rperty.

Later, .,ishinE to reimburse you, but being un-
able to lind your letter, I route e to a;sk you the
amount of the taxes advanced, and, receiving no an-
swer, w-.rote aiain, -;ith like result. In my third
letter, written three years a.o next 2'roh. I re-
peated my request, adding that failure to receive
any response that time would be understood as a
tacit desire to discontinue the curresondence,
which I naturally did when that letter, like its
two predecessors, was ignored, and the only reason
for this fourth attempt is the earnest request of
George ,'Jarren, who, after attending an Lverglades
meeting which I was too busy to take in last even-
ins, urges me this morning to write you that he
strongly advises mie to ask you for information re-
gardine the steps necessary to redeem my land if
it has been sold for taxes, and what its present
status is. Under the circumstances, I ,as reluc-
tant to trouble ,you again, but could not well re-
fuse to take his advice on the subject, as he has
hd charge of my legal affairs ever since ,r. Mac-
kenzie's death.

2

I am also still desirous of repaying you the
taxes which you were kind enough to advance for
me three years :-go if there is any ..ay by-".'.hih
I can learn the amount.

Lir. .,rren also states that several months
ago he sent you a magazine of which he was at Y
that time associate, and I, assistant, editor,
but does not know whether or not it ever reached
y'.u.

Hoping you may pardon me for thus trespassing
again on your time and attention, I remain

Sincerely yours,

(^ohiJuuaJ jL.aA
