My dear lawrence,
Yours reed. Glad all is coming on well. The Doms were here to-day. We went to the Beach together,in 2 car3. Had a good tim et ogether. Got a number of points from Mrs. D. re chick-
ens. You msy have them all.
S&e prefers the laying hen to the me?t hens because theformer will 1 ay 3 years, and then go for meat. The latter will give only meat morethrn t be egg hens, but not enough more to raketfcem pay so well. The cocks with thel?ying hens will make plenty of meat, anyway.
Miami will giv eus all themar&et we need, for a long time. Sun Flowers will make beef scrap needless, and so save money, Essex Rape i s a fine hen feed. Shell must be had for theraaking of egg shell.
With our chanc e to raise all our hen feed,we ought to do finely at Okeel=mt a, she thinks.
As to our engibe,we have not fixed theprice we will take. Our question is, Has dmreagine suffered a d epr eci ation enough to offset the appreciation ( $180) which such engines have experienced since, we bought ourg? We migtt take less than $*495.0 0 if we had to.
Layman is raiding his bid a little on Trait s 55-58 east of c anal; viz., to $2,000,00 = $71.78 per acre. Is a littl f-more definite as to what he -will put in. Shall ask him for alternate lot 3 in the 28 acres, if! I consider hds offer. Doubt if we gettogether.
Kyle iq back. Sh~ll see him fro-morrow re County matter. I understand Committee at Okeel^nta a week ago got Okeelanta petition^. Wonder if that is so? Baker and Howard would know.
If you plant corn on Mr. Roth's land, will yon and Uncle Norve get all the corn? Remember,Tr a ct 87 i s unt ok en,y et, so far as 1 know. If you want that, you might see if I suggested to -ridge that he could have it,andif he wants it. It has been farmed 2 years, and plowed twice. It ought to be good corn land,
Mr. Poult er seems about to equal the old-time records for del--iy in getting started* I certainly did my level best, as with Fenner,to give him every possible ptint, that he might avoid this very thing, I can't understand how he could have sprung his axle when he has ,apparently, nev er used his tractor. If we are not careful,we shall have Todd taking back his escrow momey again, and then it will be all off finally. He did not want to put it up this timeliest he lose a lot of

L.E.W.(2)
good interest again* We have now run considerably over the time "by which'his job was to b?ve been finished, and tbebeginning not even in sight.
Post says Mr. Mitchell will have 7 tractors on Sec. 28, ( East Be-qch.) Wonder how many he takes from Okeelanta-- Kintz, and Fenner?
Unc. H. and AUnt G. will probably st art home this week sometime. Havenot ngmed the day, yet.
Learn what you can of comingof A.C.L.R.R. from Mo or e Haven to Rita. Mr. Hector Harris,of Little Bare Beach,ig sure it is coming to Rita soon, and that we have a good chance to get it on to Okeelanta if we can raisethe n tonnage". So we want to raise all we can,
Capt. Holloway says he cut about 1 mile last month.
Glad to know if Methodist s are getting re?dy to build. Imagine they are not so keen. M*. Stone told me he told MG C. he could get along with the Bunk House and public bldgs. That saves money, of course. Am wondering if the hsrd feeling seems to be off. Hope so.
Shall see Layman to-morrow. ( He to call on me,) Also Kyle re Co. matt er. He seems to think it is in good shape,
I hope the Singl et ary r esolutions went thru as per schedule. The bill is to be ventilated in a public hearing soon, in theLegi si =tur e. Then,we want to push th e Thrice-per-week mail. Store ppl. oughtto heljp on that .strongly. Bacom's Point is soon to have a DAILY MAIL, per Post. We mugt not lag at thetail endof the procession.
P.S. I see Ray,( W.P.Bch.^ has just re- sO^^f
turned from his honey moon. Reason enough for not writing us re the bull pinions.

Ft .Lauderdale,!- la.,
My dear Prof.;
Your favor of the 21st received and I will say that l also regret not having met you before making my purchase, as your proposition appeals very strongly to me for several reasons, one of which being that my land would have been producing ere this, were it close to an organisation which were producing as well as selling.
Ever since my first trap to Davie seven or eight or nine years ago, I have visioned the future of that muck land, long before any attempt was made to explore in your direction. The last time I was in Florida, I made a trip to the lake without any intention, or means with which to purchase, but before I had left for home tied myself to eighty acres and it has kept me poor ever since, ilext February will have made my last payment, after which will try and do something with it unless sold in the meantime. This land is located about six hundred feet north of the Hillsboro Ganal about as ..arked on the enclosed map, being the El/2 of the E l/2 of Section 32-43-37. I have suggested your prcposii ion to a number of people, but the Everglades to most people in the North are just what their geographies as children pictured and a visit to them seems about the only thing that will change that picture. The other adverse feature is the lack of easy facilities to make a personal inspection. About the only ones who will take the time are those already interested- You nedd that Palm Beach road more than any one thing. I have been plugging everglades until my friends are beginning to treat the subject with more deference, simply because th_ey are sure I am "nuts", and want to gently get my mind turned in other directions, you know the game. They are sorry for me because I am willing to buy land by the quart, as they term it.
From the location of my land as given on the map, do you t think that;, say next winter, it would be possible fo.' me to clear and work some of it, through cooperation or otherwise with some reliable concern or individual? I virtually refused 70.00 per acre recently (paid 50.00). Wonder if I made a mistake in doing so.
Think you knew Frank D.Butler, Secy, of the S.T.Club in Chicago. His son Hugh tells me he has accepted a position in V'ashington in the Department of Commerce. Hugh^is an ardent George man and every little influence at >

Dear Mr. Will:
Some weeks ago you were kind enough to give me the names of the tax collectors of Palm Beach County and Lee County, and I have been in correspondence with these men. Does this mean that the Fruit Crest Association is still looking after the taxes? Kindly give me information in regard to this. Thanking you, I am

Miami, May 15, 1919.
My dear Will:
It would be a real pleasure to send you a check for the balance due on my lot at Fruitcrest, but until the War Department actually pays me 3ome money, I can do nothing. We seem to be getting very close to a settlement, but of course we can't discount prospects at the bank.
Very truly,

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering Everglades lands to you because I BSLIEVS IN IT, baoause I B3L.IE7S that, while it is now selling at $50, $60, and $80 an aore in ten-acre tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time until it will be worth 560 an acre. The reputation of the great State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the drainage of the Everglades when drained they will be the GARDEN SPOT OF THE WORLD,and famous the world over, and those fortunate enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and judgment. The national I might almost say international --reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this great.reclamation projeot. Please investigate it. Above ALL things get some of it NOW and-reap the benefit of near-future values, In my opinion, you cannot invest your money t'o better advantage anywhere else in the country.
If you cannot work the land yourself, wa can show you hew it can be worked for you.
Make up a party, go down to the Everglades'and see this wonderful country for yourself. Excursions run out cf Washington twice a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

3t.Ld.,31a.,May 15,3)919.
My dear Lawrence,
Mamraa has showedme her letter t^o you. Will add a line.
As to birds, we ought to find when they ate not had,and try to plait then. I remember that they kille d40 as. for Copper last year, and did not touch Poulte^s corn. Better find when each planted. P. planted, I'think, in 3eb. You recall we were moving the shack, than. Hot sure of Copper's planting date,
I need some data re Bryan's purchase of that '-Tract HQ,64. In filover my bed. under n Bryan", you should find phot oar aphed copy of his deed. Also, there is a cut o f hi 3 deed. Might mail me first, if you findit. If you find only the cut, bette^ read as to following:
1) Area purchased: Send me exact language.
2) Water righte; 5 "
I have plat of 80 as. north of Hew Okeelanta worked out in minute detail, and prices about fixed,Barring portions, you know we own this, clear of all incumbrance Thsfcwill give us a decided advantage in selling or borrowing. 'I find Poulter's tract cost him 68 7* of what I would have charged others for same tract, as per present schedule.
Have been hoping to hear from Mr. Gray re an offer I mad shim to buy Tract HO.9, also 22, just west o/ffhis HO.8. This is a fine chance for him 'if-he wants land near hishome. $100.00 per acre. If he does not w-ntit,I want a reply qs 3ocn as 1 can get it,as T wanttorefer the chance to man in Chicago, whom think it will strike.
Please return any marked papers Mamma may send you. I may want to savesomething. If the Layman deal goes through,I shall want to publish a lot of selling stuff, andmay wanttoqoote papers. The improvements he prop.(fces to make would mean a vast deal to thee town -and t>
to us-- if he actually madethem. He told me last night he proppsed to spen d#15,000.00 there within a year. A phone to the coast is on< the features;al60 electric lights, and alot of paving. If We so ahead,I'll try to tie him up so he will h nre to do as he says.
As ever yours,
