that, while it is now selling at $50, $80, and $80 an acre in ten-
acre tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- wben drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage-engineers is behind this
great reclamation project,. Please investigate it, Above ALL things
get some of it NOW and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you.

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Excursions run out of Washington twice
a manth. You will return-glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one )f our atereoptioon lectures -- note enclosed.
Make up a party amng your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and see odr soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just wba it is and will do.. e show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We can refer
them to one, of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiasti.over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

Ie can help you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste paper
basket. Please read it carefully, then pass it along by so doing,
you will not only accommodate us, but your friends still more.

Come and see us at your lunch hour, or an your way home from
the office. We are centrally located, on the ground floor. Our
address is 809 G Street, N. V., -- Ouray Building, opposite the

glad to see you and explain things to you, whether you buy or not.

Everglades lands to you because I BELIrVE IN IT, because I BELIEVE
that, while it is now selling at $50, $50, and $80 an acre in ten-
aura tracts on easy ninthly payments, it will be but a short time
u-itil it will be w*rth A500 an aore. The reputation of the greit
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Evaerlales -- when drains- they will be the 321,3-
SPOT OF THB WORLD ant famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foreselgt anrd
jjiginnt. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project. Please investigate it. Above ALL things
get some of it N0T and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you.

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Excursions ran out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one of our stereoptioon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and see our poil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. 'All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. Ie can refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades 'enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

Te can help you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste p'psr
basket. Please read it carefully, then pass it along by so doing,
you will not only accommodate us, but your friends still more.

Come and see us at your lunch hour, or on your way home from
the office. We are centrally looated, on the ground floor. Our
address is 809 G Street, N.' W, -- Ouray Building, opposite the
Patent Office -- our 'phone number is Main 4260. We shall always be
glad to see you and explain things to you, whether you buy or not.

December 9th, 1918.

TO YOU WHO GAVE SUCH HEARTY RESPONSE TO
THE CALIFORNIA SINGLE TAX CAMPAIGN

Prof, The. Elmer 'Vill,
Okeelanta, Fla.

Dear Sir:

I feel as though I owe you this last letter. The
California vote on Single Tax was not as large as we had hoped
for, but when we consider the methods used by our opponents,
the Anti Singletaxers, it is a wonder we had any votes at all.
The opposition was desperate. They openly made the boast that
this time they would bury us and bury single tax forever; they
may have tried to bury us, but if so, we rose again and we did
not wait until Baster; we rose on November 6th.

The arguments they used were misleading no preten-
sion of facts; they covered the billboards all over the state
with statements to the effect that Single Tax would close the
public schools. They imported the most prominent speakers and
hired the largest daily papers to brand all Singletaxers as
Bolsheviki, Anarchists and I. W, W's; they called us Pro-German,
and said that Singletax had originated in Germany. The Chris-
tian Science Monitor, which has a large circulation in Cali-
fornia, and a paper for which I heretofore have always had the
profoundest respect, published all the filth that flowed from
the pen of one of our ex-leaders in San Francisco. We asked
the Christian Science Monitor to consider our side of the case
and give us a square deal, but these people who tell us about
"doing unto others as you would have them do unto you" were
as deaf as a stone dog to our prayers and kept right on pub-
lishing our ex-leader's slush. The methods employed by the
Anti-Singletaxers were not intended to appeal to the intell-
igence of the masses, but rather to instil hatred and fear.
I just mention these things so that you may know that to get
the land away from those who have and getting it back to those
who want, is no Sunday School picnic.

I find so many Singletaxers who would like Single-
tax, but who do not want to disturb present conditions. Let
me say here that if we wait until the elect welcome us, we will
never have Singletax. To free the land is going to be a fight,
no job for a pacifist; and the nearer we get to the goal, the
harder will be the fight. This last fight is now past history,

Let us look each other in the eye. About forty
years ago Henry George wrote his message, "Progress and
Poverty". Are we any nearer to the goal now than in his time?

_ ~ 1

GERRIT J. JOHNSON
547 SHELDON AVE.
GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.

4-

Let your mind run back to the time of Henry George, Dr. Mc31yn,
Sherman, Swinton and hosts of others in the days of the Anti-
Poverty Society. Take up Henry George's "Progress and Poverty",
and see what he says about wealth and poverty in his day. Are
we any nearer to the abolition of poverty now? You and I know
that there is a wider breach today than in his day. Is it
possible that we have been trying to convert the few who think
they own the land, instead of the many-who need the land? Have
we not been trying to make Singletax a respectable business,
instead of a humane affair? Is it not a fact that when our
opponents tell some truths about us, the timid Singletaxers hunt
their holes? Our opponents say that Singletax is radical, and
that is true:- taking all taxes and placing them on land values,
thereby freeing the land, is the most radical doctrine over pre-
sented by man. We should remember one thing, if we are going
to work for Singletax, we must be ready to face the music and
realize that Henry George's message is no tea-party function.

What this great, humanitarian movement needs is men
and women with red blood, people who have a vision; people with
cool heads; people who will fight and never say die. Our lead-
ers must learn to talk in a language that we common people under-
stand. They must get down from the clouds to earth. We may not
know what they mean when they talk to us about the philosophy of
Henry George and unearned increment. But when they tell us that
a one singletax will free the land, and free land means the
abolition of poverty, we of the common clay know what they are
talking about. They must stop living above us, trying to pull
us up to their level. They must come down to us, come down where
we are, and we will all work up together.

May I tell you why I think we do not have Singletax
today? Not because of Anti-singletaxers, but because we are all
pulling in opposite directions, We are wasting our energy fight-
ing one another, instead of forming into a united front to face
the enemy.

I think it safe to say that all California Single-
taxers voted with the Great Adventure movement, but it is also
safe to say.that less than ten percent worked for it. For this
there must be a reason. We all know that Luke iorth is mighty
with his pen. He and his few associates have worked hard for
the cause, but I must admit they do not understand the power
of organization. Personally I do not believe for a few to go
hungry and do the work, while there are hundreds, yes, thou-
sands, who could be organized into one body and do so much more.

GERRIT J. JOHNSON
547 SHELDON AVE.
GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.

4..

Luke North should be kept busy working for the movement with
his pen. For him to waste his energy in any other direction
is unjust to himself, as well as the movement. I do not say
this to belittle Luke North. He knows this as well as I.. To
me, this is a time to take inventory, we must see things as
they are and get unity of action.

I still think that California is the logical state
for 8ingletax. When Henry George wrote "Progress and Poverty"
at San Pranoisco, he sowed the seed not only over the land, but
it it in the air, and all we have to do is to get together and
harvest the orop, We should remember that no matter what state
we propose for Singletax, we shall have to go through the same
work already experienced in California. The propaganda work
done there will bear fruit.

California Singletaxers should call a meeting for
the purpose of bringing all single-taxers together. If, how-
ever, Oalifornians will not get together, then it would seem
to.me we ought to center our forces on some other state, per-
sonally, I would as soon work with Missouri, Michigan, or any
other state. Boundary lines mean nothing to me. I want to
see the thing tried out.

Just look the world over. Was there ever greater
need for our doctrine than at the present time? The civilized
world has just buried untold millions of her best blood and no
one will ever know how many broken hearts for the hearts are
still breaking and will keep on breaking hor years and years
to dome.

To talk about world peace with monopolized land,
we all know is dishonest. Are we going to form a united front,
or are we going to let the little tots who are now just learn-
ing to walk be food for cannon? That is the question. Remember,
the writer does not write this letter because he wants to be a
leader, I will say right here, I will never accept any office,
for I have no desire to be great, but no one is big enough to
stop me as a layman from trying to work to free the land. My
early education of hard knocks has given me the power to see
life in its nudity, and when others stand in awe of the great,
I laugh. To me the contentment of mind of our religious rich
and the inmates of the insane asylum are one and the same. To
me the pretensions of the passing multitude are funny; but when
I think of all the beautiful replies and words of encouragement
to my appeal for the California Singeltax campaign, I realize

GERRIT J. JOHNSON
547 SHELDON AVE
GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.

*-^-

that these people who make such sacrifices for our cause, are
the great; and I stand in awe. The woman who mailed me a thou-
sand dollar liberty bond (and I know she is no millionaire);
the man who sent me three dollars, saying, I am sixty-four
years old and I earned this today carrying the hod; the shoe-
maker who mailed me one dollar and said, "I earned this mending
shoes today, and this is all I have, but if you can free the
land in California, I will move there and have something I
have never had a piece of land"; and hundreds of letters were
sent with postage stamps, and some with dimes. One man sent
twenty-five cents, saying, "I am going without a meal," and
another woman sent a solid gold bracelet. A man eighty-four
years old wrote and told me that his wife of eighty-two had been
bedridden for five years and they can barely exist; they could
not help us financially, but what a beautiful letter! He told
how they had both been Singletaxers for forty years, and still
had hopes. I believe some day the spirit of their letter will
vibrate 'round the world. This type of letter gives us hope
for the future, and greater faith in humanity.

To me, these stacks of letters are gateways to the
inner chambers of the hearts of beautiful souls, and if those
who call themselves our leaders cannot get together, we 'of the
common clay will, and we are going to win.

Yours for a better world,

P. S. During the last campaign there was born a Singletax
Publicity Committee, with Charles Alexander, 132 North Broad-
way, Los Angeles, as secretary. Their work was entirely with

to the claim which .ve have filed for .-yo. If you 1ill
note from the enclosed letter that your claim will be _-

ADDRESS ALL COMM IOATIONS
TO THE
DIRECTOR AND CHIEF ENGINbER

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
UNITED STATES RECLAMATION SERVICE
WASHINGTON. D. December 12, 1918.
OFFICE OF THE
DIRECTOR AND CHIEF ENGINEER

Mr. Thos. E. Will,

Okeelanta, Fla.

My dear Mr. Will:

I have received your favor of December 3 and have

examined with interest the enclosures which accompany it.

I have recently returned from my trip through the South

and am in entire accord with those who believe there are

great stock and dairgyossibilities in the South. Florida

Beems to be the most promising, not only on account of

the great opportunities, but because there is so much

State land.

If our program receives the support of Congress,)

I have no doubt we will find an excellent project in

Florida.

Very truly yours,

Director.

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion, I am offering
Everglades lands to you because I BSLT TV IN IT, because I BELIEVE
that, while it is now selling at $50, $0O, and $80 an acre in ten-
acre tracts on easy monthly payments, it will oe but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- wben drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over', and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The.national -- I mieht'almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great r'eclaniation prbjeot. Please investigate it-,. Above ALL things
get some'of it NOW and reap the benefit of near-future values In
my opinion, you cannot invest- your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the lahd yourself, we can.show you how it
can be worked for you.

Male up a party,, go down. to the Everglades and see'thls won-

.... ortunity -- the one -you have been looking for.
