E. C. HOWVE, WABINGTON., I). C., IIEADQUATnBus:
GENERAL AGENT FOR THE 800 G. STREET, N. W.
COMPANY'S LANDS OURAY BUILDING
, PHONE MAIN 4260
Dear Sir:- *

You will be interested to know that the work of reclaiming the
Florida Everglades is advancing by leaps and bounds.

The Furst-Clark Construction CciTp.ny, a leader in its line,' is
handling the work with extraordinary skill and vigor. 'Six treat dredges are
working night and day, and several more are expected soon to begin.

Visitors, constantly coming to us from the 'Glades, are enthusias-
tic over the work and the outlook for the investor and homeseeker. One sub-
stantial4 business man declared at one of our meetings that the buyer 'is
"sure to win," and that "the only question is as to how much he will make."
The President of the State University ,of Florida visited us recently, and
testified to his faith in Everglade lands. Two men who have actually
crossed the 'Glades one, over twenty years ago, and the other, later --
have recently called, and strongly confirmed our statements regarding the
character of the lands and climate. Still others tell us that we understate
the facts, and that "the half has not been told."

Not long since, one caller bought of us ten acres, then twenty,
then another ten,'and started for Miami. After seeing the lands, he wrote
us for twenty acres more.

Everglade lands are going fast. Within a year, one tract of
64,000 acres, and another of 180,000 acres were sold; another of 46,000
acres is now almost gone, and thousands of acres from other tracts have also
been sold.

The prices have risen from $24 and (30 to $40 and $50 per acre.
Our fifty-dollar land is now almost gone, ani buyers can afford to waste no
time unless willing to purchase at $.60 and ;SO per acre, at which figures,
Also, we have lands to sell.

Our office is now at 809 G Street, Ht. W., in the Ouray Building,
one of the best office buildings in thc city. We are on the ground floor,
and have a fine window with southern exposure, in which are displayed choice
products from the 'Glades. Crowds stop, day and night, to inspect it. Our
lantern lectures, reinforced by new slides, are given Tuesday, Thursday, and
Saturday nights, and are finely attended.

We shall be gali to welcome all our friends, old and nEW, to our
new headquarters. To those who ha.ve n.:t ynt bought "e can present THE op-
portunity of a life-time; to those who have, we can outline one plan which
will simplify their task of paying for their lands, and another, for obtain-
ing revenue therefrom.

Very truly yours, VJAtHINGTON OFFICE OF,

Mr. L '. Will,
Okeelanta, Fla.

,y dear Mr. Will:-

Under separate cover the Fort dyers Press is sending
you several copies of their weekly and daily papers for distri-
bution at Okeelanta. A similar amount has been sent you for
South Bay. The same has been done for :Mr. ... :I. Hall for
Rita and Gardenia and some copies have been sent to Glade Crest.

Read the article in the 7Teelly first headed "An Out-
let for the upper 'Glades via Fort Myers." Then read the Glade
article in the daily. The article in the weekly also appeared
in 'edne1day's daily.

Our ;r'. Bigers returned from :oore Haven yesterday.
He handed your ar icle to .'r. Curtis, one of the proprietors of
the Press. Mr. Curtis being so .-inhat new in this State and in
the newspaper business, I showed him the various locations on the
may and in fifteen minutes headed your article with a prelude and
sent it to press. Then I sat down and wrote the article which
you will note in today's. Press.

I was the first editor and proprietor of the Lake Worth
Herald, understand the development game, know the newspaper blusi-
ness and am pretty well famiiliar with South Florida.

Am the local correspondent for the Tampa Times and
Tribune, as well as the Times Union, Jacksonville, and use the
nmerican Eagle in this County, as well as the Fort yearsr s P reas
whenever I feel like saying something.

Both articles in the Presls were hurriedly written,
still the outlet offered for you in a logical and a practical
one. I knovr Lee County. .:as the publicity man for .Ioore /
Haven here for over eighteen months and if the Moore Haven
crowd had an honest bone in their carcasses I would be yet.
Should an outlet to this town as outlined in the Press be ac-
ceptable to the people of th'e five towns ,lrntioned a prompt
and co-operative action on the part of the five communities may
induce this County to co-operate with you. By. passing every
available hand west of ":iami Canal, cutting a trail towards the
nearest cape or point on the Lee County prairie, and by co-
operating with whatever help can be mustcredi here, auto connec-

tions may be had long before this season is over with Fort
", e .' s.

X wish to offer the following iuggEstion. If the pro-
position as outlined in today's Press finds favor with you,
taking into consideration that the people in Rita, Gardinia, /
GladeCrest and South Bay have already read the Press articles,
I believe it would be correct to call a joint meeting of all
five towns and in meeting assembled get up a petition to
the Lee County Commissioners and one to the yoard of Trade,
Fort TIyer-s, appoint your delegates to come here for a spec-
ial meeting, and I believe that connections can be made satis -
factorily. It is worth trying and I shall be glad to co-op-
erate with you and give you all the publicity needed. "iith
the road completed to Okeelanta you will be in position to
meet cross state travellers going and coming. Parties leav-
ing here could wire Fort Lauderdale to have a boat at Okeelanta
and leaving Lauderdale they could wire ;ye-s to have an auto
to meet tVe boat. Before leaving the lake region travellers
could t-ke in Glade Crest, South Bay, Rita, Gardenia, South
Bay, as well as your town.

The cost in money, time and labor is insignificant in
comparison with the benefits received by connecting with Fort
.iyers and the outside worked by an auto road, enabling tourist,
visitors, ho!:.eseekers and investors to ride right into the
heart of the "Glades.

Fort Myers will chn.Ipion your cause, work with you
and be amply rewarded, for your success will be ours.

Connecting Okeelanta with Fort '.Tyers as suggested will
without any doubt revive the interest in the everr-lides.
Another surwggstion occurs to me, and that is to get everybody
you can to write the Press cor'rmeniJing on the article should it
prove to be satisfactory to them, and get them to do it now.
It will prepare the County Commissicners and the Boar'oTF-
Trade for your co,,ing.

'..ould like to hear fioin you at your earliest conven-
ience.

Yours truly, /

H/R

Okeelanta, Fla., March, 2nd. 1918.

H.S.Fenner,

Dear Sir:-
Yours of 2/11-18 was misplaced, hence the delay in
answering.

"Little Ben" is driven by an 18 to 20 H. P. Budha gasolene
engine. Its weight with extension about 3300#. Without wheel ex-
tension as used in the north 2900#. In the north it pulls 2-14"
plows. In the sawgrass it does the best work when pulling one 16"
bottom but with this plow I turn completely over 20 to 22".
Plow 10" deep and travel at a speed of 3 to 4 miles per hour.

The price of "Little Ben" without wheel extension or plows
is $1075.00 F.O.B. factory. Wheel extension $30.00 and the plow
about $125.00.

I don't know what can be accomplished in the summer months.
Working on a plow which I hope will turn the sawgrass uncut.

The freight on tractor to FT.Lauderdale is about $68.00.
Terms of sale $150.00 cash with order and balance upon arrival at
Ft.Lauderdale.
They are going fast as we can get them out. Tho can ship fairly
promptly.

Sincerely,

S. W. Bollinger.

Professor Thomas E. Will,

Okeelanta, Florida.

Dear Mr. Will:

Responding to your last letter I may say that I never contemplated

your selling my land without making a charge for commission. The ques-

tion in my mind was whether it would not be fairer all around to let

you make the sale as my agent, with the understanding that you would

receive a commission therefore, either personally,or as the agent of the

Fruitcrest Association. As you seem, however, to insist upon a different

condition, you are hereby authorized to sell my holdings at a price equal"J

to the sums heretofore paid by me for my holdings, including that paid

for piowing(or on account of the purchase of the plowing machine)plus

interest on the amounts paid, at the rate of six per cent per annu from

the respective dates of payment. You are f~aiti r authorized to make

said sale either for cash or one-third cash, and the baunce on time.

The deferred payments may be in instalments as low as $30 per month, evi-

denced by promissory nops bearing interest at the rate of six per cent

per annum, provided, however, that none of said notes run longer than three

years. Holdings Numbers Zand 87 may be sold separately, thus; Holding

No.78 may be sold at $570 and Holding No. 87 for $276 respectively,plus -'

the proportionate interest that should attach to each from the respective

dates of my payments therefore. If sold separately, the deferred payments
I may

may be as small as $15 per month,
You may have until July 1, next to make the sale, and for your

commissions whatever the difference may be between the amount coming

to me as above provided and the sum for which you may be able to sell
the property.
The above embraces ,substantially, the terms of your proposition,
as I understand it.
Very truly yours,

P.S. What do you think of the idea of renting out my land,,ould
you find some one to put in a crop either for cash or on shares ?
It looks like a pity to let the land lie idle.

* JOHN E. HOLLAND
ATTORNEY-AT-LAW ? 1
407 BURDINE BLDG. j
MIAMI, FLORIDA :'arch 3, 1918.

Dr. T.E. Will,
Okeelanta,
Florida.

Dear Doctor:

I observe an article in the Palm Beach paper that
came to my office this morning, of the issue dated March 29,
entitled "New Commitissionere District will be formed byU'ihty
Board". I enclose this and draw your attention to the following
points:

1. They pretend to need, and be anxious to provide another
Commissioner to represent the Okeechobee.and Glades country;
whereas from a map that I enclose with the District outlined,
you will observe that this Commissioners District does aQt ap-
proach.nearer than eight miles of the lake and two miiles of
Glade Crest, embracing o#ly Townships 44 and the South two miles
of Townships 43, from the West line of Section 27, Range 38 ex-
tended.

Now, this embraces no old Glades settlement, nor the
shore or Island district, and in fact takes &n only the few
farmers along the Palm Beach canal, east of a point about two miles
beyond the bend.

8. It is apparent that the sole population and voting
residents would be found in Palm Beach and vicinity. Thus under
the guise of a Glades represen.&tion bespeaking Glades interests
and safe guarding Glades affairs, we are undoubtedly to be
dominated by Palm Beach.

3. The entire Lake and Island country and eighteen miles
across the Upper Glades ..t the West, which district embraces all
those people who pioneered the proposition and who deserve special
consideration it seems to me, are left entitelywithout represent--
ation.

4. This district is vitally important to the County. It
contains a very substantial population, many of whom have been on
the job for some time and know what they want. This district is
producing a very large proportion of the newIyealth of Palm Beach
County. Its conditio e are peoul&ar to themselves and not in
common with the rest of the County, except possibly the West half
of the proposed new district.
That part of the County is so remote from, and its con-
ditions, requirements and interests are so little known by the,
citizens of Palm Beach and irrediate vicinity where the most of
the voters reside, and it is a hinderance to progress and mie-
representation and grossly unfair, to say the least, that this
District that is now the real attraction and henceforth will be
in the center of the stage afPalm Beach County, should be with-

JOHN E. HOLLAND
ATTORNEY-AT-LAW

MIAMI, FLORIDA

out representation of their own, and the thinking and the ex-
ecuting for them must be delegated to West Palm Beach.

5. If this pretended Glades representation is legalized
it will be .ore difficult to accomplish real Glades representation,
and this may be a coheme to counteract any future Gladee agitation
for their own interested.

I believe it is worth while, Dootor, to get the
people starred up on this and get into the Palm Beach and Lake
Torth papers and advocate a real Upper Glades Con;..iesionere
District.

Very respectfully,

--

FORT MYERS BOARD OF TRADE
THE OPERATING MEDIUM OF
PROGRESSIVE PUBLIC SENTIMENT IN
FORT MYERS AND LEE COUNTY, FLORIDA
B. E. TINSTMAN, PRESIDENT W.M. JEFFCOTT, TREASURER
L. G. BIGGER. SECRETARY

March 5, 1918.

Mr. W. L. Will,
Okeelanta, Florida.

Dear Mr. Will:-

Under separate wrapper, I am sending you
copy of the Press containing one of the replies to the article
which appeared last week. I received a very nice letter from
Mrs. McCullough which I shall publish together with others
and if sufficient sentiment is shown there are some possibilities
ahead in the shape of a sudden action from unexpected quarters
in connection with satisfactory transportation facilities to
the west. You will notice in Mr. Doty's article he says that
"If they are going to build it well and good, if not let's
see if there is not some other way to father the job" and I
say to you that there is, providing all those interested
in the Okeelanta, Ritta, Gardenia, DJew Okeelanta, Gladecrest
and South Bay section co-operate along the plan which will
be proposed, if protffca. acceptable to thoseinterested. The
job can be fathered and through the Fort Myers Press with the
co-operation of all interested, and "Now is the time for all
good men to come to the aid of their party" to use an old
quotation. You are at liberty at any time to voice your
sentiments, vent your feelings and tell your.troubles through
the Fort Myers Press.

With best wishes, I am,

Yours sincerely,

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering
Everglades lands to you because I BELIEVE IN IT, because I BELTEVE
that, while it ip now selling at $50, $60, and $80 an aore in ten-
oare tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national I might almost say international -,
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project. Please investigate it. Above ALL things
get some of it NOW and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot Invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you.

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. ,Excursions run out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.'

Come to one if our stereopticon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests, Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruit and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just'what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
,the aid of maxhificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employe.in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We can refer
them to one of their number in the forestt Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

We can help you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste paper

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering
Everglades lands to you because I BELIEVE IN IT, because I BELIEVE
that, while it is now selling at $50, $60, and $80 an aore in ten-
aore tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
State of florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the prioe is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project.

Excursions run out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one of our stereoptioon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests. Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take's sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just wha it it 'and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs, taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE ia your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. .We can refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She is urging her friends to buy.

We can help you to pay for your land -- oome and let us explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste paper
basket. Please read it carefully, then pass it along by so doing,
you will not only accommodate us, but your friends still more.

Come and see us at your lunch hour, or on your way home from
the office. We are centrally located, on the ground floor. Our
address is 809 G Street, N. W., -- Ouray Building, opposite the
Patent Office -- our 'phone number is Main 4260. We shall always be
glad to aee you and explain things to you, whether you buy or not.

aore tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre. The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the price is, comparatively speaking, on
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project.

*Excursions run out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one of our stereopticon lectures ---notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant. highly
profitable evening as our guests, Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with.you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored elides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will oonvinoe you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for,

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We can refer
them to one of their number in the Forest Service, who returned from
a visit to the Everglades enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
acres. She isourging her friends to buy,

We can help you to pay for your land come and let us explain
how we can do this.

routine with its eternal sameness and slow promotion. I am offering
Everglades lands to you because I B~LIEVE IN IT, because I BELIEVE
that, while it is now selling at $50, $60, and $80 an acre in ten-
aore tracts on easy monthly payments, it will be but a short time
until it will be worth $500 an acre, The reputation of the great
State of Florida and that State's great resources are behind the
drainage of the Everglades -- when drained they will be the GARDEN
SPOT OF THE WORLD and famous the world over, and those fortunate
enough to buy now, while the, price is, comparatively speaking, on .
the ground floor, will, indeed, take pride in their foresight and
judgment. The national -- I might almost say international --
reputation of one of the greatest drainage engineers is behind this
great reclamation project. Please investigate it. Above ALL things
get some of ii NOV and reap the benefit of near-future values. In
my opinion, you cannot invest your money to better advantage anywhere
else in the country.

If you cannot work the land yourself, we can show you how it
can be worked for you. ,

Make up a party, go down to the Everglades and see this won-
derful country for yourself. Excursions run out of Washington twice
a month. You will return glad you went, glad you bought.

Come to one of our etereoptfoon lectures -- notice enclosed.
Make up a party among your friends and spend a pleasant, highly
profitable evening as our guests, Come and see our soil exhibits,
tropical fruits and plants -- take a sample of our soil exhibit
away with you, have it analyzed and prove to your own satisfaction
just what it is and will do. We show you this wonderful country with
the aid of magnificently colored slides, some of which were made
from photographs taken by an employee in the Government Printing
Office. All these things will convince you that HERE is your op-
portunity -- the one you have been looking for.

Ladies are particularly welcome at our lectures. We can refer
them to one of their number in the Foret Service, who returned from
a visit-to the Evergladee enthusiastic over her purchase of twenty
agres. She is urging her friends to buy,

Ie can help.you to pay for your land -- come and let us explain
how we can do this.

Don't throw this letter and literature into the waste paper
basket. Please read it carefully, then pass it along by so doing,
you will not only accommodate us, but your friends still more.

Come and see us at your lunch hour, or on your way home from
the office. We are centrally located, on the ground floor. Our
address ie 809 G Street, N. I., -- Ouray Building, opposite the
Patent Office -- our 'phone number is Main 4260. We shall always be
glad to see you and explain things to you, whether you buy or not.
