GENERAL AGENT FOR THE 800 G. ST IrFF. N. 1%.
COMPANY's LAND OURAY BI'Il il .,<.

Dear Sir:-

You will be interested to know that the work of reclaiming the
Florida Everglades is advancing by leaps and bounds.

The Furst-Clark Construction Company, a leader in its line, is
handlin; the work with extraordinary skill and vigor. Six great Jd'edges are
working night and day, and several more are expected soon to begin.

Visitors, constantly coming to us from the 'Glades, ars enthusias-
tic over the work and the outlook for the investor and homeseeker. One sub-
stantial business man declared at one of our meetings that the buyer is
"sure to win," and that "the only question is as to how much he will make."
The President of the State University of Florida visited us recently, and
testified to his faith in E-.'*-:7ide lands. Two men who have actually
crossed the 'Glades one, over twenty years a~o, and the other, later -
have recently call:-, and strongly confirmed our statements regarding the
character of the lands and climate. Still others tell us that we understate
the facts, and that "the half has not been told."

Not long since, one caller bought of us ten acres, then twenty,
then another ten, and started for Miami. After s.ein.; the lands, he wrote
us for twenty acres more.

E;.~~r'!.Th lands are going fast. Within a year, one tract of
64,000 acres, and another of 180,000 acres were sold; another of 46,000
acres is now almost gone, and ih.- .~. of acres from other tracts have also
been sold.

The prices have risen from .4 and $30 to $40 and $50 per acre.
Our fifty-dollar land is now almost gone, and buyers can afford to waste no
time unless willing to purchase at `30 and 80O per acre, at which figures,
also, we have lands to sell.

Our office is now at 809 G Street, N. W., in the Ouray Building,
one of the best office buildings in the city. We are on the ground floor,
and have a fine window with southern exposure, in which are displayed choice
products from the 'Glades. Crowds p-, day and night, to inspect it. Our
lantern lectures, reinforced by new slides, are given Tuesday, Thursday, and
Saturday nights, and are finely attended.

We shall be glad to welcome all our friends, old and new, to our
new headquarters. To those who have not yet bought we can present THE op-
portunity of a life-time; to those who have, we can outline one plan which
will siffoplify their task of paying for their lands, and another, for obtain-
ing revenue therefrom.

Very truly yours,

ADDRESS CIAL COMMUNICATIONS TO
THE SECRETARY OF STATE
WASHINGTON. D. C.

DEPARTMENT OF STATE
WASHINGTON

January 3, 1918.

My dear Professors

Yours of November 20th, came to Washington while I was

absent. You certainly are doing heroic work. It is a pity

you cannot have an office force and equipment to enable you

to do it with more ease.

I am glad you are still optimistic over your Florida

proposition and wish you abundant success.

From the fact that you had not advised me that my land

was ploughed, I assumed that you had not been able to get to it.

Some time ago, you offered to use the lat, association

on a six per cent. basis. Do you still wish to do this? If so,

why not plant something, or otherwise utilize my holdings?

I note with great satisfaction that you think you will be

able to resell my tracts this winter. I am not in very good

health and am all the more anxious that this.e2.Aone. Please do /i

your best.

You must know how I appreciate your letter after your long

silence.

With best wishes to you and Mrs. Will for the New Year, I

remain

Sincerely yours,

Mr. Thomas E. Will,

Dr. Thomas E. Will,

Okeelanta, Fla.

Dear Dr. Will1

I have your letter and am enclosing herewith my check for

$24,00 covering payments on tracts 71 and 97i I have been short of

funds for the last few months, but I expect to be able to resume my

payments quite regularly again until my tracts are paid for.

I am very glad to know that we have with us an agricultural

leader. It seems to me that with the demand for products we ought

to be able to actually make something this year. Has the cold weather

damaged the sweet potatoes you planted? I have been looking for

some of your newspaper articles in the Tropical Sun but haven't seen P
any recently? I would like to get all the information I can about

our district, and if there is any paper that gates the news better than

the Tropical Sun, I would like to secure the name of it.

Am enclosing herewith a pamphlet describing the Beeman

Garden Tractor, which I note is being used successfully in the Glades.

Have you seen one of these cultivators? It looks to me like a mighty

good thing.

Verytf

Dr. Thomas E. Will,
Okeelanta, Florida.

Dear Dr. Will:

Mr. Greathouse has been in and submitted a

renewal note in full for the amount due on January 13th.

This is not acceptable to us, because of our previous cor-

crepondence and our desire to liquidate the loan as soon

as possible. We have, therefore, asked Mr. Greathouse

to curtail the note lO/., reducing the same to $4S0.

Very truly yours,

Vice president.

FLORIDA ABSTRACT COMPANY

PRESIDENT
J. W. MEANS. ABSTRACTS OF TITLE :: FIRE INSURANCE
VICE-PRESIDENT
W. R. LAWLEY, TITLE INSURANCE
SECRETARY

TREASURER
WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

January 15, 1918

Dr. Thomas E. Will,

Okeelanta, Fla.

Dear Dr. Will:

Thank you for yours of the 12tn containing check for

$12.05 for abstracts. Please find'enclosed receipted bill.

I did not know you wanted these abstracts for Federal Farm Loan

purposes at the time you ordered them. I sincerely trust you

will be able to get the approval of the Examiner of a large

number of loans in your section. It seems to me you have the

advantage over the immediate coast territory, as yours is real

farming. I understand the Examiner did not approve about A(f

of the applications made by the three associations here on the

coast, and there seems to be doubt now whether anything will

be done this year towards getting these associations going.

I believe I told you I made a trip to Columbia, S. C.

to visit the Land Bank people, and learned what they demand in

the way of title evidence. ',7e are prepared to get out these

abstracts in the form desired, and our company has been approved

by the Land Bank for this work. Will be glad to be of any as-

sistance to you along this line.

Very truly yours,

H SF Pesiden

HSF

President

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION WORK
IN
AGRICULTURE AND HOME ECONOMICS,
STATE OF FLORIDA.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA. DIVISION EXTENSION DIVISION.
OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION. UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA.
AND UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT
OF AGRICULTURE. COOPERATING.

West Palm Beach, Fla.,

Jan. 21st, 1918.

Dr. T. E. Will,

Okeelanta, 2lorida.

Dear Dr. Will:-

We are very anxious that the county shall be freed

of the cattle tick and the only possible way to decide this matter

is to hold an election. To do this we must have a certain percent

of the signatures of the voters of the county so I am enclosing a

petition which I am asking that you get every possible voter to

sign before Saturday night of this week and return the petition to

me in the franked envelop.

The reasons that we are hurrying this is that we

have found that in order for the Government to free the county

by December let when they will free other large areas we must

hold the election by April let and advertise 60 days previoulto

this. This may require some effort on your part but there will

be active workers in every part of the county and we believe that

the object is a very worthy one. YOur effort and cooperation in

the matter will be very much appreciated.

DIP THAT TICK !

Sincerely yours,

County Agent.

Dear Comrade Will:-

Yours of the 28th. on hand.
I hope you will succeed with your onions. I believe farming on the
upper Glades in the winter will be a thing of the past. It appears
to be getting colder every year. One man from Georgia here in the
shop, blames it on the opening of the Panama Canal.

Did you have another freeze the last few days of December and
later since? What does Mr. Mitchell think of it?

I have considered your proposition of doing custom work.
I think it will be to late tho this winter to get all equipment
together, after knowing your past experiences, but still think of
taking it up for next winter in time, if you think any more work
left in that line.
I would like to know who the people are and whether they are people
with money in case I should come down to do custom work and make a
living?

Does Mr. Bollinger's tractor accomplish more and better work
than the Ford outfit? I would like to know where you got all the
attachments for the Ford Automobile and every thing connected with it
costs of different parts? Might buy Ford here and run it down from here,

If it is so profitable for other people to raise spring potatoes,
how about getting some going ourselves? Would like to have a few
acre planted on one of my tracts. Hope you will be able to get some
of my land broken this winter.

You got me in bad in regards to F. C. prices. I was boosting it
at booklet quotations. A commodity may be worth a certain price, but
getting it is a different proposition. I hope you will be able to sell
the rest at that price. I do not think that I can sell any more, with
the people I get in contact. I believe Comrade Steele is safe ns he
told me a few days ago that he wrote to you about terms of $20.00
a month. I may get in bad again, as I said you might agree to that.
Its hard to sell land to wage slaves in these times when they have
to turn all their money to the grafters. Some of the greatest graft
scandals will be turned loose one of these days. Nothing but graft in
this part of the country.

Yours fraternally,

H. S. Fenner,

Dr. Thos E. Will,

Okeelanta, Fla.

Dear DR. Will;

In reply to your letter of Jan. 12, received here Jp.n.16: Mr.

Pope, vice pr si-hnt of #Munsey'd noticed t once th t the noti you

sent is dated in 1118 instead of 191C and declined to take it 800

years old; also to change it. Also he said you had not sent any

check nor authoetization to pay the amount og the curtail, $6e.20.

I have been expecting every day since to hear thAt you had sent the

amount necessary ior this purpose, but have had no word. No such check

or othpr paper giving me the necessary money accompanied your letter

to me ; nor was anything of tgo kind mentioned J# in the text.

I am at a loss to kno- whft better to do than to send the

note back to you for immediate correction and return to me with the

cheek for the naurtall called for.

Continued sickness in my home and the stress of this bitter c

cold, without coal tnd with conditions of every kind more difficult

is a sharp reminder that *"e r-re at war. I'm hoping for peace.

I return receipted bill for Government Publications with

thanks. I have intended to drop all who can not seem to make the

paper useful, and hope it really ,ill continue to prove so to you.

We are all reasonably well. I happope you have heard of Mrs. .v

With best wishes to you, your family and your work,

Professor Thos.E.Will.
Fort Lauderdalw,Fla.

Dear Friend and Comrade:

I just returned frbm Kansas City a few weeks
ago where I had been detained for three months
when I expectedd to be there only three weeks for
the closing of Mr.Hoffman's estate, but when one
gets into the hands of courts and lawyers you can-
not tell what the outcome will be.I left mother here
in California practically alone and it was not pleas-
ant to be thus detained.

The estate was finallyclosed and I am very glad
to at least in a way, have things in my own hands even
tho matters are aot as Mr.Hoffman thought and planned
for them to be or as I had hoped they would be.

I found Judge_ tton very disgruntled toward you
because you did not answer his letters and pay the in-
terest when due and just insisted on putting the full
force of the law against you.I held out against it and
he took me to task saying I should not mix sentiment
,with buisness affairs.Comrade Will I wanted to write
you first I feel that you will do what is right.I would
not trouble you at this time were it not for the fact
that I am under great expense for my mother is very ill
and under the care of doctors and I am in need of money
I will make you a proposition,if you can send me the
amount of the mortgage I hold I will wave the interest.
I understand you have been very successful and trust
you will find it convenient to handle this soon for me

I am quite sure that you being such an intimate
friend of Mr.Hoffmans that you realize he was not a
rich man and particularly when he gave half of what
he had to the former Irs.Hoffman and then put in his
children's name half of what he kept for himself re-
taining the income fromit while he lived, and now after
the estate administration costs and the settling of
the debts it leaveqspe very JLttle to maintain a home
these times when living is so high.

Coming home I stopped off at Manhattan and visit-
ed the Agricultural Collegeto get what data Icould

concerning Mr.Hoffmans experiences there.I was disa
appointed to find so little of the college history
of that period kept, finding only a rather small
book written by Professor Walters and it contains
but a mere mention of Mr Hoffmanhaving been appoint-
ed a regent but it gives quite a fine account of
your presidency. No doubt you have a copy of this
book.

I am in hopes that this California climate will
benifit mother,we are at Martins Sanitarium high up
in the mountains,a beautiful spot and to day is so
perfect that it is hard to believe that such a ter-
rible slaughter is taking place in the world amid
so much suffering and sorrow.I have been wondering
if your fine boy is now in service.

Closing for this time hoping to hear from you
soon and with very best wishes to you and family I
remain.

Very Cordially,
